4.0 out of 5 stars Worthy and unthought of collection of rock and roll., November 8, 2003
By B. Gonzalez "Latino Magico" (Basingstoke, hampshire) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Jerry Fuller is most famous for being a talented song writer, however in the late fifties/early sixties, he did indeed cut a few singles of his own that were pretty good. "Betty my angel" is probably about the best of the fourteen tracks and sounds uncannily like Bobby Vee's Devil or angel, even though that was probably only a coincedence because Vee's single was released the following year. Jerry Fuller got revenge by making "Shy away" sound almost identical to the more popular singer's style.
It should be noted that Fuller deserved a bigger following than he actually gained as a singer, he wasn't a bad vocalist and although his hits were not exactly chart busters - his biggest was "Tenessse waltz" at a lowly #63 - he did cut some decent songs. Perhaps he wasn't original enough to gain more attention, or perhaps tastes were just a little too fickle at the time, but he did indeed deserve more success than he earned. I definately recommend this collection of catchy tunes to fans of the 'age of innocence'. You'll be pleasently surprised by the quality of the tracks featured. Enjoy...

4.0 out of 5 stars A Much Better Writer And Producer Than A Singer, September 11, 2007
As a collector of charted hit singles I love it when ALL of an artist's hit sides are in one compilation - especially when that artist only a few to begin with. But where Collectables is concerned hey make it a habit to leave off at least one. Here they did it again.

Fuller didn't exactly burn up the charts for the Challenge label with his twangy country-tinged voice, as his best Billboard Pop hit was Tennessee Waltz which settled for a # 63 Hot 100 in late 1959 b/w Charlene. This came a couple of months after his initial chart entry, Betty My Angel, which struggled even more, settling in at # 90 Hot 100 b/w Memories Of You.

Shut out in 1960, he returned briefly to the charts in 1961 with Shy Away [# 71 Hot 100 b/w Heavenly in May]. and Guilty Of Losing You [# 94 Hot 100 b/w First Love Never Dies in October]. Another nine years would then pass before he charted again, this time with Columbia when I Know We Can Make It reached # 39 Adult Contemporary (AC) in May 1970 b/w Could It Be? That was followed by another nine-year drought before Salt On The Wound struggled to a # 98 Country in January 1979 for ABC, b/w No Time. A few months later, Lines reached # 90 Country on MCA b/w Over You.

Hardly what you could call a blazing success as a singer. So why omit all his Hot 100 B-sides along with his one AC and two Country hits in favour of cuts that weren't even as good as his mediocre charters? Doesn't make sense.

But could he ever write a mean tune, including the Rick Nelson hits Travellin' Man, Hello Mary Lou, A Wonder Like You, Young World, and It's Up To You and, for Gary Puckett, Young Girl, Lady Willpower, and Over You\, in addition to producing hits like O.C. Smith's Little Green Apples and Mark Lindsay's Arizona, among many more.

Easily one of the most important producers of his time and, at the price shown, not a bad bargain.

5.0 out of 5 stars For American Bandstand Fans!!, April 26, 1999
By A Customer
Do you remember watching AB each week, copying the latest dance steps and listening to the top songs of the late '50's and early '60's? Then you will enjoy the Golden Classics Edition of Jerry Fuller - "Teenage Love." You are probably not familiar with Jerry Fuller as a singer, but as a songwriter you will recognize his 1961 hit "Travelin' Man" recorded by Ricky Nelson. He also wrote "A Wonder Like You" for Nelson and later wrote "Young Girl" and "Lady Willpower," which were hits for Gary Puckett and the Union Gap. These early recordings of Fuller on the "Teenage Love" CD are reminiscent of the stylings of Ricky Nelson, the Everly Brothers and even Elvis. I wore out the grooves on my 45's listening to "Angel From Above," "Through Eternity," and "Betty My Angel" over and over again. For those of you who are not Baby Boomers, a 45 rpm record was the predecessor of the single CD. I urge you to get this classic CD - golden songs by a golden talent from a golden time.
