Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Recorded live at the Barrymore Theatre in Madison, Wisconsin in May 1997, this EP deftly demonstrates Cockburn's ability to discuss politics without resorting to the sort of dull pedantry that usually overtakes such discussions. As a Canadian singer-songwriter of great renown, he's moved away from the plaintive folk approach and injected his music with unusual rhythmic bounce, allowing synthesizers and other modern technology emblematic of world decline to color his world as he rails against it. The title says it all: "Call it Democracy," "Stolen Land," "Fascist Architecture." This is one serious dude. --Rob O'Connor

From the Label
From tumbling, guitar-driven rock and roll to subtle acoustic creations, Bruce Cockburn's live performances run the gamut of stylistic approaches.

He is a performer who masterfully moves his audience. From tumbling, guitar-driven rock and roll to subtle acoustic creations, Bruce Cockburn’s live performances run the gamut of stylistic approaches. He is a performer who masterfully moves his audience through a range of emotions, at once inspiring them to dance and next inspiring them to think. Woven together with a thread of integrity and intelligence, YOU PAY YOUR MONEY AND YOU TAKE YOUR CHANCE -- LIVE is a glimmering snap-shot of a provocative and important performer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny, February 4, 1999
Right from the Loud electric arpegiated cord that opens this album, you know it's going to be awesome. From the rocking "Call it Democracy" to the dark, intense "Strange Waters", and the amazing fingerpicking on "Facist Architecture" and the title track, there's not a lousy track on this album. The recording is clear and well mixed, but still has a raw in your face quality that you would want from a live performance. I own a few of Bruce's records and enjoy them, but this is by far my favorite. I never really get tired of hearing it. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome CD..., June 13, 1999
By A Customer
I had heard "Charity of Night" before, so I 'gambled' on this CD (for only $7... not much of a gamble!). The energy of live performance is completely intact, and for an "older guy", Bruce still rocks right up there with any 20-something band. "Strange Waters", "Birmingham Shadows" (both off 'Charity') and "Stolen Land" all have a great atmosphere, and are intense without needing to be really noisy or need screaming vocals.

5.0 out of 5 stars All about "LIVE"!, March 22, 2008
I've seen BC live a few times ,and listening to his studio work, compared to the live releases, I'd have to say that if you want to really hear this guy, get the live CD's. He is a live performer way beyond compare. Especially to the twenty-somethings,and I just can't even think of any younger performers who have the heart, intensity and talent of Cockburn. Live music really is better! If you've never seen him live, especially if you are a player, then go see him. Your jaw will drop!

"Stolen Land" and "Strange Waters" are the best tracks. It's a short CD, but a powerful rendition of the energy that Bruce brings on stage. Read more
