4.0 out of 5 stars "Classic Hits" from Anka's 1973-1977 period, March 18, 2002
By David Hugaert (Honolulu, HI United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Paul Anka has had a phenomenal career, both as a singer/composer and as a sometime actor during his five plus decades in the entertainment industry. "Classic Hits" contains a sampling of this talented performer's remarkable career, with a majority of these classics recorded during his 1973-1977 tenure with United Artists. Four of the hits contained in this collection feature duets with Odia Coates, including the gospel-like "I Don't Like To Sleep Alone", as well as their number one smash "(You're) Having My Baby" and the smooth "One Man Woman/One Woman Man". "(I Believe) There's Nothing Stronger Than Our Love", another major hit for both Anka and Coates, is included here as well, as is one of Paul's most memorable and beloved hits, complete with a Frank Sinatra-like vocal performance with "Times Of Your Life". "My Best Friend's Wife", although somewhat overrepetitive, is still an enjoyable tune, nevertheless. "Anytime (I'll Be There)" has its melancholy moments, but fits in here with ease. Three "newer" renditions of familiar Anka classics are included here too - "My Way", which has been recorded by dozens of artists, including Sinatra and Elvis Presley. This version is brilliantly played out in grand Paul Anka fashion. The peppy "A Steel Guitar And A Glass Of Wine" and the downtrodden "Let Me Try Again" complete this stellar sample collection, courtesy of an international superstar that is Paul Anka. But, since "Classic Hits" is geared more toward the casual Anka fan, the Anka afficianado will find "30 Years Of Hits" more to their liking, as that compilation contains twice as many songs covering Anka's earlier (and later) period(s). "Classic Hits" is still an essential collection all the while, and thus belongs in any music fan's CD library. Make sure it's included in your purchases today, before it becomes a lost treasure!

5.0 out of 5 stars about this music album collection.....P.A classic hits...., September 11, 2008
By Ang Poon Kah (Singapore) - See all my reviews
I bought this album from the internet for this album as my cassete copy of this album ecept my way, a steel guitar and a glass of wine, let me try again, my best friend's wife is spoilt during the early 70's that my father exchange this tape and a free kodak camera (first version of autofocus camera that uses the cube type of flash) when the win the contest out of rolls of kodak films that he purchased. The first 20's will be able to collect the price but my father is the 11th winner of this winning package. This tape has benn played over and over his tape player in his old scrapped toyota (first version with the tapered front, yellow in colour) and the tape finally kock out of working condition. I tried to look for many years in Singapore but vould not find them as this album is solely marketed by kodak due to the theme song found in this cassette times of your life which is found in the TV advertisment for Kodak. I managed to find this album on the internet in the late 90's and I purchased one and managed to collection one of this fine collection of Paul Anaka (full song version). The music are all very nice aand is recommended to those whom are interested in this genre of music.

4.0 out of 5 stars fine budget priced CD of Paul Anka in the '70s, January 2, 2008
By Matthew G. Sherwin (last seen screaming at Amazon customer service) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
Paul Anka sings some pretty fine tunes on this budget priced CD. The quality of the sound is rather good and this is an excellent CD for people just getting to know the artistry of Paul Anka by listening to his hits from the 1970s.

"(You're) Having My Baby" starts off with a mature Paul Anka crooning this as only he ever could! His excellent diction helps to bolster his performance and I really like the musical arrangement. Good backup chorus, too. Moreover, listen for "One Man Woman/One Woman Man;" this number shines when Paul takes it and breathes life into it with great sensitivity. I like the electric guitars on "One Man Woman/One Woman Man;" and I predict that you will like this duet with Paul and Odia Coates very much.

"Times Of Your Life" showcases Paul as one of the very finest crooners we ever saw; he never misses a beat and this catchy `70s melody still works well today. What a fine ballad! "Anytime (I'll Be There)" captures Paul once again at his best with a `70s flavor to the overall arrangement; I am very impressed by "Anytime (I'll Be There)."

"My Way" gets a touching interpretation by Paul with a solid backup chorus harmonizing in the background. I really enjoy this number.

The album closes with "Let Me Try Again." Paul sings this optimistic number with all his heart and it makes a beautiful ending for this album.

My only qualm is that the album only has ten songs. Yes, I know; this is a budget priced CD. However, ten songs is thin and I wanted an extra song or two. Humph!

Overall, Paul Anka fans will probably still want this in their collection; and it's also a great starter CD for people who want to know what Paul Anka was truly capable of doing in the 1970s. I highly recommend this album for people who like classic pop vocals, too.
