Biography

Jamaica's first dancehall superstar, Yellowman ushered in a new era in reggae music following Bob Marley's death. His early-'80s success brought the popularity of toasting -- the reggae equivalent of rapping -- to a whole new level, and helped establish dancehall as the wave of the future. For better or for worse, he also epitomized dancehall's penchant for "slack" lyrics -- that is, casual… Read more in Amazon's Yellowman Store

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

An essential for Yellowman heads, this nine-track set corrals some of the hard-working reggae rhymster's finest musical moments. Stateside reggae purists view him as the "anti-Bob," the salacious jokester who piloted reggae's nosedive into its sex and drum machine- driven dancehall phase after Bob Marley's death. But One in a Million proves that the albino orphan who captivated the early 1980s reggae scene is one of the music's seminal mic rockers. The delightfully sly and sexy "Morning Ride" is a paradigm of reggae toasting style. "Operation Eradication" hits like a bulletin from the front in the ongoing war between corrupt police and ghetto sufferas. One In A Million even includes "Them Mad Over Me," the Yellowman anthem. --Elena Oumano

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice and toasty!, February 21, 2000

Yellowman mashes it up in this excellent album. It is definitely one of his best. It features his early Toasting/DJ style and he reminds us that in his prime there was nobody better. You can't miss with this album. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Required Dancehall Roots, November 20, 2000
By Marc Brodehl (Oakland California) - See all my reviews
This album was released in 1982 as a 10" under the title "Operation Eradication." This album helped propel Yellowman from the Jamaican club scene to a headliner at the 1982 Reggae Sunsplash. "One in A Million" as renamed by Shanachie in 1989 helped change the face of reggae from "roots and culture" to a new dancehall style. The influence from tracks "Couchie" and "Operation Eradication" can be heard in music today and other tracks such as "shorties" are pure classic Yellowman. This album is a must have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of it's kind, July 31, 2001

Hmmm.. Yellowman as the "anti-Bob" who began reggae's nosedive into sex and drum machines? Well, it's true that dancehall is to reggae what gangsta rap is to classic soul and R&b,and Peter Tsoh in particular spoke out against Yellowman and his contemporaries. but Yellow man was clearly the best of that genre. Songs here like "Shorties", Operation Eradication" (see if you can stop singing this to yourself after hearing it) and my favorite "Lover's Corner," which takes his chanting style to new heights, have a jivey charm and apppeal far beyond the jabbering jackasses that came in Yellowman's wake. "GREEEEAAT JAMAICAN KETCHUP!" Pretty soon you too will be "A mad ovah him."
