5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant percussionist sadly unknown and unappreciated., July 15, 1998
By A Customer
Jo Jones headed the rhythm section of Count Basie's Big Band for 10 years. Sadly, there are only two CD's available that contain his work independant of Basie's big band. They are both outstanding pieces of work. Jo Jones was truly an unsung master of the Brushes. There is a clear dichotomy between his drumming style and the styles of more famoud drummers such as Rich and Krupa. Jones is much more subtle, it provides for a different but just as enjoyable listening experieice from the driven beat provided by Krupa or Rich. This album is highly reccomended for anyone that likes Jazz.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some GREAT old jazz..., December 6, 1998
This was one of my dad's favorite albums when I was growing up. It has lost none of it's appeal and the music sounds as wonderful today as it did when I first heard it. Little Susie and Spider Kelly's Blues are my personal favorites with the amazing Ray Bryant on piano. The Essential Jo Jones is exactly what it says...essential for a jazz collection.
