4.0 out of 5 stars Hedy West is so hard to find, October 22, 2005
By William W. Smith "-wick smith" (Basking Ridge, NJ USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Hedy West (who died earlier this year) is worth the price of admission here. Unfortunately her two wonderful records for Vanguard are no longer available and almost impossible to find. As I listened to this record I realized that Hedy West's was the voice I missed the most. Though apparently she is not proud of her performance on this CD, she does stand out. Jackie Washington also has a great voice, though I found I didn't remember him any near as vividly as Hedy West. The Greenbriar boys are also worth a listen, as they started the whole idea of Northerners playing bluegrass.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Folk Music, October 9, 2002
By A Customer
Hedy is being far too modest in her review of her performance. She and the rest of the singers/players on this album do a great job. There is so little available of Hedy/Jackie Washington, et al, that any issuance should be bought immediately and treasured. While Vanguard has attempted to give value for the money by combining two LPs on 1 CD, my complaint about this album is the same about many Vanguard albums: tracks from the original albums have been left off the CD. While you do get a lot of music for the money, I wish that they had made all the original cuts available. With Vanguard's constant repackaging of their back catalogue, they will hopefully eventually dribble the whole thing out. I think Hedy's idea of John Herald of The Greenbriar Boys singing "Stewball" again and again is a great one, but not in lieu of her cuts!

1.0 out of 5 stars Ouch!, September 4, 2000
By Hedy West (Penn Valley, PA United States) - See all my reviews
I HATE it! I'm GREEN, GREEN, GREEN!!! WHY must this specific recording be reissued? It should have stayed in the basement vault! It makes me cringe and squirm! I was 22; I needed those next years of singing to develop. May it get forgotten FAST. Or better yet, let Johnny Herald sing "Stewball" over and over in substitution for those tracks of mine! Listening to myself on New Folks at least puts the fire under me to get cracking faster reissuing my later & more current recordings!

Don't buy that record! Or, if you do, put your fingers in your ears! Hedy West <HedyWest@aol.com>
