3.0 out of 5 stars a rocky transition to jello's spoken word era, May 26, 2000
By charley hardman (occupied US) - See all my reviews
this album was too far removed from the classic dk 'throw up some mics and do it' recipe, and it smells of the same disease which zaps many songs -- great words slapped into tunes which don't fit. words aren't enough; they should kick the music. scribbling bon mots on a napkin and asking somebody to thwack guitar chords to them doesn't always work (ever hear of a thing called 'rap'?). you can practically see jello reading off his lyric sheets into the mic, happy to have any sort of backing tracks to accompany his diamond thoughts. apart from the music/lyrics problem, the sound of this cd is hack. it sucked to see the gods of clear thinking succumb to an affected, dated studio sound which didn't fit dk's at all.

unless you have money to burn, buy the old dk's and the spoken word albums first; this is a bad attempt to mix both. 'bedtime for democracy' should've been shot for disobeying -- it wouldn't start. wanted to love it. couldn't. dk's rule.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some of the greatest lyrics ever written, August 1, 2004
This review is from: Bedtime for Democracy (Audio CD)
This album is the pinnacle of the DKs creative expression. Tight, fast-paced performances are highlighted, and the lyrics on this disc put Jello Biafra among the elite of lyrical genius alongside the likes of Roger Waters, Jim Morrison, Bob Dylan, Frank Zappa, Ian Anderson, Neil Peart. This is the best example of what real hardcore punk is about. Buy it; you won't be sorry.

3.0 out of 5 stars not the best, but still pretty good, October 13, 2004
By distortion15 "distortion15" (santa cruz, ca usa) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bedtime for Democracy (Audio CD)
there have been some reviews that just bash this last album, however it's not that bad. obviously, compared with their previous albums, this final CD does not do the dead kennedys justice. however, it still flows very well and it's enjoyable. this cd has a whole different feel than their previous ones. but then again "fresh fruit" has a different feel as well. for the first time listener, this CD should not be the one you start with, if you want their hits get "give me convenience or give me death" but i'd say "plastic surgery" gives the overall mix of the dead kennedys even if it's not usually a fan's favorite album since it does not contain "california uber alles" nor "holiday in cambodia", but that's what makes it unique. all their cds are unique however.

in conclusion, this wasn't a bad last effort, there's better but this cd is still essential to the collector.

definitely recommended.
