4.0 out of 5 stars Powerhouse Score, July 20, 2003
By The No Evil Killer "Know No Evil" (Everywhere, Anywhere, Nowhere) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
It's been used in a dozen trailers, most prominently in the ID4 trailer. And why not? Hans Zimmer created 2 of the most powerful themes in the past decade for this movie. It's so empowering that it'll fill you with confidence and defiance.

There are only 5 tracks on this CD (all horribly out of order and with incorrect titles) even though it lasts over an hour (the longest track is almost 25 minutes long). It was a bad mistake by Hollywood Records to organise the CD this way as you have to skip thru a lot of tension/filler music (this CD has plenty of exactly that) to get to the good bits.

There is an extended score out there featuring an additional 10 minutes of music, it has a blue cover instead of a red one and has a correct track listing in chronological order. As follows:

1. Opening/Conflict/Alabama-9:42
2. Resurrection-9:47
3. Little Ducks-2:03
4. 1SQ (Alternate)-11:09
5. Mutiny-8:58
6. Day 12-5:44
7. Three, Two, One-1:54
8. 3:00/1SQ-16:09
9. November 2nd/2SQ-2.32
10. End Titles-7:33

Total Time 75:55

It's a more complete package but a little hard to find so you might have to make do with the commercial release. Still a great purchase and I highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best film scores ever, February 25, 2001
By Ash1138 "www.myspace.com/ash1138" (Centennial, CO United States) - See all my reviews
Watch this movie... LOUD! Pay attention to how the musical score really carries the emotions of this film.

In a day where most film score try to be subtle and hide in the background, Hans Zimmers score melds with Tony Scott's film like two lovers having foreplay continually staying on the brink of climax. But the climaxes do come, and when they do they are very satisfying.

I'm a bit disappointed by some of the reviews this CD has received. Have people forgotten that this music was written to accompany a film? I hear complaints that the tracks are too long or that there is dead(?) time in the composition. Hans Zimmer certainly didn't write this score to appease an MTV audience. If you need something with constant movement and don't understand the point of the ambient parts in a piece like this, I have some really good Trance CD's I could recommend to you.

If you are the kind of person who likes to listen to a score away from the film or appreciate classical orchestration in general I cannot recommend this CD enough. This is one of the best examples of Hanz Zimmer's work (and he has many great examples; also see the scores for Backdraft and Gladiator). If you call yourself a Hans Zimmer fan, you aren't until you have this CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Go for the tide, March 28, 2003
By Brandon Cutro (Tyler, Texas United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Here lies another great score by Hans Zimmer in the likes of The Rock and The Peacemaker. Here, the music runs at one hour, split into only 5 tracks. The music overall is powerful and testosterone filled with a large orchestra and an all male choir. The main theme is one of Zimmer's best that perfectly represents the trials and tribulations of battle in a submarine. "Mutiny" starts out with the chorus humming along with a synths and a gently played guitar that then leads into the main theme introduced lightly and then once again in full force. "Alabama" is the longest track I have ever come across on a film score album, clocking in at almost 24 minutes! "Little Ducks" features the choir singing the traditional Navy hymn, "Eternal Father Strong to Save", which is perfectly appropriate for a film like this and sounds wonderful as well. "1SQ" is a more hard hitting action cue than the others, as "Roll Tide" comprises the main theme and the Navy hymn together. All of the tracks basically sound the same, which is why I didn't go into specific detail on each one. That would take forever, especially on "Alabama". But all in all, a great score that I think you will enjoy, especially if you are a Zimmer fan.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant enough, but not great or original
Like many Hans Zimmer soundtracks, this one is all Zimmer. It has that Zimmer feel, and as such it is interchangeable with the rest. Heard Gladiator? Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Crimson Tide soundtrack
The soundtrack is very repetitive. Having not seen the film I can't say why. The music is very evocative of the sea, and battle, and is very stirring. Read more

Undeniably the greatest score even written.

Bombastic yet peacefully relaxing, tho' never timid, whilst forever breathing a sense of tender compassion.
