Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording
Released three months after her murder in 1995, Dreaming of You introduced the Tejano queen to the mainstream pop audience. Four new tunes recorded with producers Keith Thomas and Guy Roche envisioned Selena as a dance-pop diva similar to Janet Jackson or Mariah Carey, but with a Latin twist. Far more arresting are the two classic mariachi numbers and a bilingual duet with David Byrne recorded for the movie Don Juan DeMarco, in which Selena had a bit part. The contrast between her passionate invitation to "come dance with me" and Byrne's nerdy white-guy delivery indicated her wide-open creative potential. The rest of the album consists of remixes of Selena's Latin-pop hits, including a masterful version of "Techno Cumbia" that bring out the hip-hop and reggae flavors in the groove. The tragedy was that such a promising introduction also served as a sad farewell. --Rick Mitchell

5.0 out of 5 stars Bittersweet and Beautiful, August 25, 2004
By Fruit Loop (Down South) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Selena's last album is a tragic tribute to a magnificent talent, a painful vision of what would have been had she lived, and evidence of just how much the music world lost when she was taken from us. Her rich, sweet voice paints a picture of dreams realized and snatched away with the haunting "Dreaming of You" and "I Could Fall in Love." Even non-Spanish speakers can enjoy the happy rhythm of her Tejano classics. Selena will forever live on through her music and in the hearts of generations to come with this classic CD. Adios, Selena. We miss you.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have, November 25, 2005
By Ryan (Florida, USA) - See all my reviews
This CD is a must have, sadly Selena's life was cut short before the CD was finished but the 5 new tracks she left us with are a tragic prediction of how well she would have been.

"I Could Fall In Love" An amazing vocal input by Selena. A catchy beat about a woman falling in love with a man already in a relationship. 10/10

"Captive Heart" Sounds almost 80ish, great song. 9/10

"I'm Getting Used To You" Written by Diane Warren, it's a great song although the video they made without Selena was horrible. 10/10

"Gods Child" A Spanish/English song I enjoyed it 8/10

"Dreaming Of You" This is what the album is all about, this is the best song Selena ever recorded in my opinion, also one of the best love songs of all times, I must have listened to this song 10,000 times it never gets old. I'm glad Selena insisted against her label to record this track for her album. This showcases her amazing vocals and ability to go from low to high at a snap of the fingers. 10/10

"Missing My Baby" A soulful song which showcases all of Selena's range, reminds me of something Mariah Carey might record. 10/10

"Amor Prohibido" (Forbidden Love) A fun song that will have even non-spanish speakers dancing, the song is supposed to be about Selena's Grandparents who fell in love although one was poor and one was rich. 9/10

"Wherever You Are" A recording in Spanish and English with the Barrio Boys, Selena's vocals should be displayed more in the track the Barrio Boys are more dominant in it. Good song though 7/10

"Techno Cumbia" Selena does a rap in this which I find very good showcasing her range as an artist, a very fun song. 10/10

"El Toro Relajo" This is a salsa track Selena recorded for the movie Don Juan DeMarco, shows Selena's ability to do any genre of music, I'm not a fan of the genre but Selena livens up the song. 7/10

"Como La Flor" This song was Selena's first Spanish hit, meaning "Like The Flower" in English. 7/10

"Tu Solo Tu" Another track which was recorded for the Don Juan Demarco movie 6.5/10

"Bidi Bidi Bom Bom" A very fun song that Selena wrote you'll find yourself dancing throughout it, it's about a girls beating heart whose in love. 10/10

I don't speak Spanish I'm not a fan of Spanish music but Selena has that appeal that makes her Spanish music interesting and fun. The English and Spanish tracks are equally delightful.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Legacy of a Great Star Of latin music, November 15, 2002
A Kid's Review
A few months ago I bought this album and what can I say it's very terrific. I first heard of Selena from my grandmother who loved Selena and I often listened to this album to improve my Spanish and now I know some of Selena's songs in Spanish. Dreaming of you is a wonderful collection of hits from the late Latin Diva. There are three English songs I could fall in love captive heart and i'm getting used to you that were originally supposed to be on Selena's first English album on SBK records that she recorded before her farewell. There is also wherever you are a English version of her Spanish hit Dondequera Que Estes and features Latin pop sensations Barrio Boyzz. Also featured is a new version of Missing My Baby which features Full Force {of Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam fame} God's Child {Baila Commigo} which features Selena dueting with rock singer David Byrne and A boy like that from the West Side Story { the new version} Soundtrack. Last but not least is the Disneyish title track which is simply beautiful. In my eyes Selena would have made it big if she were here but she leaves us with a wonderful collection. Buy it if you can,
