5.0 out of 5 stars Julie's World..., August 29, 2003
By L. Shirley "Laurie's Boomer Views" (fountain valley, ca United States) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
This review refers to the "Trois Couleurs - Bleu" soundtrack CD(MK2/Virgin Music)....

"Blue" is the first in director Krzystof Kieslowski's beautiful trilogy-Three Colors Trilogy (Red / White / Blue) [Import](All-region)(Remastered). It is the story of Julie who has lost all that is dear to her, her husband and daugther, in a horrible auto accident. Composer Zbigniew Preisner captures Julie's journey from her withdrawal from life to her reawakening with a beauty to match the film.

If you have seen the film, you will remember that Julie's husband Patrice, was a renowned composer. The album opens with a captivating choral rendition(5:13) of "Song for the Unification of Europe"(Patrice's version), and continues to mesmerize with a taste of each scene. The tracks are short but flow together to form this touching story through Preisner's exquiste compositions. Relive the journey with "Van Den Budenmayer-Funeral music", the wind, organ, and full orchestra versions, "Oliver's theme"(piano), and Julie's Version of the "Song for Unification of Europe",a wonderful 6:48. In track 19 "Oliver and Julie-Trial Composition", you will relive the moments of Julie's rebirth into the world as you can hear her speaking as she and Oliver rework the composition. Also included is a teaser from "Red"(the final part of the trilogy),"Bolero". There are 25 tracks in all, but is more like one continuous musical story.

Directed by Wojciech Michniewski, the orchestra, including the beautiful flute(Jacek Ostaszewki)and Piano(Konrad Mastylo) is hypnotizing. The Silesia Philharmonic Choir directed by Jan Wojtacha, with soloists Beata Rybotycka and Elzbieta Towarnicka will take your breath away.

If you have seen these films, you probably already know you can't get enough of them and this album is a beautiful way to relive the emotional journey. If you have not seen it but are a fan of Preisner(or want to get to know him), you will find this stirring music to be another one of his wonderful gifts to lovers of music.

Th CD is an excellent quality. Put it on the stereo and just let it take you away. It includes a pamphlet that has the words from the choral section both in French and English..Here is a sample...
"Though I speak with the tongues of angels,
If I have not love...
My words would resound with but a tinkling cymbal..."

Get lost in Kieslowski's story, Preisner's music and Julie's world...and enjoy...Laurie

3.0 out of 5 stars OK but Red is better, March 1, 2003
By Matthew Lohrentz (Boulder, CO United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The Blue, White, Red movie trilogy is fantastic, especially Red! And, of course, the music helped make it so, especially Red! But, this Blue CD, like most movie soundtracks, is too chunky - bits and peices of songs lifted from the movie and thrown together with barely a cohesiveness. Now if the music was taken from the movie and then worked into longer songs and arranged in a flowing order then it would be worth repeated listening. But how can you get emotionally drawn into a song that lasts only 1 minute!? Which is frustratingly followed by 5 or 6 more 30 to 50 seconds-long tracks. Don't get me wrong...there's some beautiful music here but they'd be more aptly called music "clips" not songs. If you want to collect a bit of the musical character of this trilogy without shelling out 45 bucks for all three I'd definitely recommend Red. Red DOES have a cohesiveness - at least enough of one. My favorite music from the movie is from when the gorgeous Irene Jacob/her character is floating down the runway at the fashion show. Well, this bit of music is revised, reworked, and repeated through out maybe half of the album - which, even though they are still only 2-4 minute tracks, allow you to "get into" the music. And the other tracks that make up the rest of the album are quite nice, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Music to fill your heart., November 26, 1998
By A Customer
Music is an essential part of Krzysztof Kieslowski's trilogy. It not only serves as a background for the story, but it sometimes becomes the characters themselves, or what they are feeling at a particular moment. Zbigniew Preisner's soundtrack makes you feel as if you are one of the characters. Sometimes the music is quiet, almost meditative, sometimes it is grandeur, exciting, and it always fill your heart. Preisner's talent makes this first part of Kieslowski's trilogy one of the most beautiful and striking moments of recent film music history.

Soundtrack under Blue (Three Colors Trilogy)

It's a great pity Preisner hasn't composed more music! Something classical that's really classical and yet modern.
