5.0 out of 5 stars The greatest bass sax player ever..., September 22, 2000
Adrian Rollini was really the only person who ever truly learned to master the bass sax. Here Rollini is heard mostly as a sideman in other jazz bands such as with Joe Venuti & Eddie Lang's band "kickin' the Cat" and "Beating The Dog." Rollini gets plenty of solo space, he is also heard on the later tracks on vibraphone, however the highlights are the early tracks on which he plays bass sax. But before buying this CD I would recomend that you start with The Goofus Five, which Rollini has the most solos on bass sax and goofus, Timeless Records has released a spectacular CD titled "The Goofus Five" get that before you buy this, then try two other great CD's which Rollini appears on "The California Ramblers" on Timless Records and "The Little Ramblers"(a smaller group of The California Ramblers, where Rollini plays nass sax and goofus). But get The Goofus Five 1st, he did his best sessions i nThe Goofus Five.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just a great cd, September 8, 1999
By "larriman" (Richmond, Virginia USA) - See all my reviews
This cd demonstrates the great Adrian Rollini. He may have been forgotten, but his playing whether it is on the bass saxophone, vibes, goofus, piano or drums was great. He could turn a regular jam session into a great jam session. Adrian knew how to phrase, weave in and out music, and add the spunk into this swingy jazz music. It was so good that I am buying if I can, the cds California Ramblers and the Goofus Five. The other entertainers are great, too such as Joe Venuti,Bix Beiderbecke, the Dorseys,Frankie Traubauer, etc, but it is Rollini's presence that makes this cd what it is. Yes, Mr. Rollini was and still is the best bass saxophonist in the world.ADRIAN REIGNS!For a great dose of vintage jazz get this cd,you will remember it for sure, then you will remember Adrian Rollini, and how he contributed to the jazz/swing world.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Mentor, June 14, 2003
By A Customer
A great CD. Beatin' the Dog is an exceptional track, giving you the power and feel of a man and his instrument, and it's importance in jazz. Why this instrument and the tuba have fallen out of favor is beyond me. Adrian Rollini and my dad, an alto, tenor sax and clarinet player for Glenn Miller Orchestra at the Glenn Island Casino, (1939 ---> 1941), are my mentors. Finally, at age 52, I have purchased a new Selmer model 56 bass sax. I can play my dad's arrangements from his manuscripts, written for a tenor sax, since I just play a octave lower. Another CD to check out is:
1928-1929: The Best of Fred Elizalde & His Anglo American Band.
There the stand out track is: Crazy Rhythm

5.0 out of 5 stars Adrian Rollini, the First and the Best.
Adrian Rollini is truly my favorite bass sax man. He pioneered the use of the bass sax, but he truly soared with his fantastic and innovative leads. Read more
