5.0 out of 5 stars Brutal, Gory, And Genius, November 7, 2003
By Twitch (Atlanta, GA) - See all my reviews

General Surgery is definitely the finest band of the early years of grindcore, even topping such legends as Carcass and Napalm Death, and thier 1991 debut 'Necrology' is amoung the greatest albums ever recorded. By combining early gore influences with thier own brand of ultra heavy grind influenced metal, this band has created a masterpiece of sickness and splatter. Lyrically this band went where not many had previously ventured, and given that several of the members are actual medical doctors, the reality of the content is completely and utterly graphic (gotta love that). I guess to give it a comparison I would have to relate it with the music of early Carcass and Impaled. With some of the catchiest shredding riffs ever recorded (specifically on "The Succulent Aftermath Of A Subdural Haemorrhage", definitely one of the most extreme grind tracks in history) and vomit drentched vocals, the allure of this album mostly pertains to those who think that the modern scene is lacking or those who just want some of the best extreme metal they can get their hands on. For fear of going on, and on, and on about the quality of the recording, not to mention it's brilliance, I will leave you with a simple statement; General Surgery's 'Necrology' is by far one of the greatest exercises in grindcore ever recorded and is a must have for fans of the genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars GOREgrind, February 20, 2007
This is one of the best bands that I have found. I picked up the disk at a used record shop and was amazed when I played it. The quality is not very good, but not as bad as early Carcass. The band started as a Carcass cover and it shows in their music. If you go to their website, generalsurgery.nu they have the entire ep available to download. I also recomend that you buy their new album Left Hand Pathology, it's just as extreme, just with better quality sound. Check out The County Medical Examiners too if you haven't before.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent Carcass Imitator, February 2, 2009
By Mclusky (Florida) - See all my reviews
I got this used in the 90's at the local record store for less then 6 or 7 dollars so I didn't expect much. It was better then a lot of Carcass imitators out there and even had decent production to it. If you're into early Carcass and can't get enough of the medical/horror theme in your metal then these guys are worth a listen. It's nothing special but not as bad as some of the imitators out there.
