5.0 out of 5 stars Hall, Desmond, Baker = awesome., February 23, 2009
This review is from: Concierto (Audio CD)
This is a great album. Chet Baker is really good and with his reputation for excessive behavior it is more remarkable. Chet is on his game as is Desmond. Jim Hall is good as expected, but it is the ensemble work with the 2 horn players that makes this exceptional. I like this album much more than Bill Evans' Interplay which is also an ensemble album with Jim Hall. Stereophile magazine has used this album to test speakers and I understand why. It is well recorded and has fine performances. I recommend higly for any fan of Paul Desmond who would like to hear Paul in a group other than the Brubeck quartet. That being said, this is a Jim Hall feature and he is also in great but understated form.

5.0 out of 5 stars Concierto w/ Jim Hall & Dave Matthews Orchestra, August 27, 2003
By James (Kailua, HI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Concerto de Aranjuez (Audio CD)
I like this album. I would also recommend Jim Hall's Concierto album with Paul Desmond, Chet Baker, and Steve Gadd. It's an amazing album, but I love the first two cuts on this album, and I would recommend it to anyone. Beautiful orchestration, which I personally like much more than Miles Davis' arrangements of the piece.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Fluff, April 11, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Concierto (Audio CD)
This is probably Jim Hall's most famous recording. One reviewer dismissed it as vile fluff. No accounting for taste. Depends on what your preferences are. One of my friends turned me on to this recording and she vastly prefers this to Miles Davis account of Rodrigo's concerto for guitar which I love but gosh I really like this too. One might call this WHITE Jazz. The piano solo ROCKS with deep beauty. There is a very good reason why super models should be walking down a runway to this kind of music. It is the embodiment and personification and epitome of it's time and place. A special moment in musical history of the 20th Century and Gone with the Wind. No one is doing it now.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my all time favorites!
Many haven't heard the Concierto, because with its length it doesn't get much play. SUCH A SHAME. One of the five songs I'd take for a desert island; I never tire of it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Vile fluff!
This is slick, over-orchestrated mush, elevator music. But Jim Hall's other version with Paul Desmond and Chet Baker, "Concierto", is excellent.
