4.0 out of 5 stars Fine soundtrack music, but they left out 2 key tracks, January 24, 2004
By D. Ayars "dayars" (Deerfield, IL USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
There's some fine music on this soundtrack album, but just to be a little clearer about what other reviews below mention: if you're looking for the haunting, electronic instrumental love theme that plays twice in the film to highlight the growing passion between Guy Hamilton and Jill Bryant (Mel Gibson and Sigourney Weaver), it's not on this CD. The piece you're looking for is called "L'Enfant"; it was written by Vangelis and is included on his "Themes" CD, as well as the "Opera Sauvage" CD others mention. Search amazon for Vangelis Themes, and listen to the sample for "L'Enfant". If that's the track you want from the film, get "Themes" or "Opera Sauvage", instead, because it's not on this soundtrack CD. And as another reviewer clearly identifies, the operatic-sounding track heard in the film is "Beim Schlafengehen" from Richard Strauss' "Four Last Songs"; it too is omitted from this soundtrack CD. This CD contains the Indonesian-set pieces Maurice Jarre wrote for the film. Great as far as they go, but too bad they left out these two key tracks, especially since they certainly had room for them.

2.0 out of 5 stars What you're looking for is not here, January 30, 2000
By A Customer
If you are looking for the lovely piece from this film that is has a bell or chime-like quality to it in the beginning and is repeated throughout the piece It Is Not In The Soundtrack CD. A previous review helped me immensely with this as I had bought the ALBUM when it came out and was disappointed to find the music missing. IT CAN BE FOUND ON VANGELIS' OPERA SAUVAGE and is called L'enfant. Buy that one, this one is only good for background music for an Asian-themed dinner party.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Missing Song..., October 17, 2002
By plynck (Nawth of Bawstin) - See all my reviews
Actually, there are two missing pieces.

The first, as referenced below, is "L'Enfant", by Vangelis. A curiously introspective piece for what is a tense and dangerous scene in the movie, but makes sense in terms of the developing love story.

The second missing piece is the vocal selection that Billy Kwan plays for Guy Hamilton. The piece is entitled "Beim Schlafengehen", from the Last Four Songs of Richard Strauss. (Interestingly, the credits in the movie and the video I saw called it "September", another of the four songs, but that was incorrect.) The selection in the movie was sung by Kiri Te Kanawa with Colin Davis and the London Philharmonic. But, if you truly love that piece, get the recording by Gundula Janowitz with Herbert von Karajan - it will tear your heart out.

This movie has been special to me since it first came out. The book, by CJ Koch, and this soundtrack have equal quality.

3.0 out of 5 stars Where's the Song?
There was a song while the credits rolled that was absolutely beautiful. I've been looking for this album for years! But the song isn't on this album. What's up with that??

5.0 out of 5 stars Really transcending work by Maurice Jarre!!!
The music is quite unique. The gamelan is a very interesting instrument to listen to. Even if you did not see the movie, the music sells itself! I love this soundtrack!

1.0 out of 5 stars The good stuff is missing
Unfortunately, the most memorable music from the movie is not included on the CD. This borders on fraud. What is included is rather boring.
