First at all, there is to remark Carl Nielsen was a violinist, and just used the piano as a working instrument when he composed.

Nielsen's piano music was composed in quite three different phases. The first of these covers the last decade of the XIX Century, it just about domestic music and sincerely it doesn't present major importance.

The second period to my view is the most interesting of all. Three major compositions seem to prove it by far.

The Chaconne OP. 32, - written in 1917 - for instance. Such work is hovered by a dark and autumnal poetry, strongly spiced with phantasmagoric ornaments and incorporeal thrills. The transitions are almost indiscernible. It begins unmistakably in D minor and ends sophistically in the major.

Theme and Variations Op. 40 is if I may, a descriptive, and cheerfully programmatic piece, and it seems to have been inspired when he went to the Zoo, according the words of Anne Marie Telmanyi.

The Suite op. 45 best known as Luciferan (although Nielsen wrote it in the literal sense of Lucifer= (Bringer of light) and basically consists OF Six variations.

I got this set because among other reasons I am a profound admirer of Nielsen's music; so in this sense I recommend it.

On the other hand, I cannot give this performance five stars due Madame Westenholz is extremely flat in the whole sound and so lacks in expression.
