5.0 out of 5 stars When Folk Music Was Fun, January 27, 2001
By Joel D. Berg "flash464" (Harvard, Illinois United States) - See all my reviews
I recently saw the Kingston Trio in concert and couldn't believe the good time had by all. Listening to their classics and their new songs, I was reminded of all of the folk albums my parents played when I was a child. Without a doubt the best of those albums was "Mighty Day on Campus" by the Chad Mitchell Trio.

I was only 7 or 8 when we first listened to this album on vinyl, and I almost wish the CD had the slightly scratchy sound that made the album so fun. Yet when I recently heard "Lizzi Borden" again for the first time in more than 10 years, I was taken back to my childhood. The song is hilarious, as is "Super Skier" and "Rum by Gum." The Chad Mitchell Trio represents a genre of American folk music that was laugh-out-loud fun, irreverent, and witty. The melodies are engaging and the songs are easy to sing along with. This, folks, is what good music is all about. If you loved the Kingston Trio, you'll love the Chad Mitchell Trio.

Buy this CD and find out what you have been missing all these years!

5.0 out of 5 stars the perfect introduction to the chad mitchell trio, September 4, 2004
By E Rice (western ny state) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
i'm another who's been listening to (and singing along with) this group for decades. and, even after countless hearings, i'm still amazed at the musicianship and the brilliance of the arrangements.

chad mitchell's voice is phenomenal--and i don't like tenors. but i could listen to him for hours at a time. the technique, the colors, the range--this is a performer to measure others against.

the harmonies and counterpoint are fabulous. the arrangements are spectacular. the width, breadth and depth of musical knowledge and taste and style on this album (and their others) are apparently things of the past, but at least we have the group's recordings to remind us of a time when musicians AND their audiences actually knew something about real music, not just manipulative staging.

i use this group, in particular this album, along with the tannahil weavers, to demonstrate that you really really do NOT need amplification for excitement.

if i had a list of best 100 american albums, this would be on it, close to the top, along with ella's cole porter and bernstein's shostakovich 5th.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's worth it just for "super skier" and "Lizzi Borden", July 9, 1998
By Jon Bunnell (Florence, AL USA) - See all my reviews
The songs "Lissie Borden" and "Super Skier" alone make the album worth buying but just about all of them are top notch. There are some really hopin' songs and also some mello ones but the lyrics in them keep you interested. One of the best things about these songs is that some of them are kind of like the musical equivilant of political cartoons. I can't think of any other kind of music like them which makes this album a very fun change of pace.
