Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

"Look--up in the sky! It's a crow! It's a bat! It's ..." A collection of routines (or portions of routines) culled from other Pryor CDs, Supernigger works best as an introduction to the comedian's standup act. If you've only seen the concert films and want to hear what all the fuss is about, Supernigger can whet your appetite. Anyone who's more than a casual fan, however, will likely be turned off by this CD's sloppy editing and jerky transitions from bit to bit. Supernigger still packs a few laughs--particularly if you've never heard Pryor before--but it will appeal most to rabid completists looking to round out their catalog and budding Pryor-philes primed for an overview. --Michael Gerber

3.0 out of 5 stars Ruchard's always funny, but CD doesn't do him justice, January 5, 2000
By Keturah Kendrick (New Orleans, LA USA) - See all my reviews
I'm a huge Pryor fan so I can't say this CD was not worth the $. One of the many aspects of his work that has properly classified Pryor in the genius category is his brutal (sometimes frightening) honesty about experiences he has encountered and the not so attractive characters he knew as the "norm" growing up.

Supernigger is a must-have for those who love to be reminded of our "unsung" heroes - the broke brotha from next door, the take no trash sista from the bar, the gold-flashing, cadillac driving pimp/macdaddy and other such members of the innercity black community especially prevalent in the 1960's.

However, the editing of this CD does not do a good job in showcasing Richard's perfect comedic timing, amazing imagination and the connections between each individual bit. At times, it seems to be disjointed and choppy. Those who aren't Pryor students would probably think he is not as polished a performer as he truly was during most of these routines.

I will recommend it though. Our stories being told by our father/uncle/brother/cousin/ ex-boyfriend. It is worth a listen. And more than a few hearty laughs.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent, but far from his best..., October 25, 1999
By A Customer
I'd love to give this a higher rating, but the poor sound quality and choppy editing make this a poor choice for a first-time Pryor buyer. Even the best bits ("Fighting," "Fathers", "Cold Blood & Smoove") aren't enough to warrant buying this over his other albums. Get 'Craps' and 'Is it something I Said?' first, and if you love them, then give this a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Was God a junkie ?, October 4, 2002
By "stephens@accountmate.com" (san rafael, california USA) - See all my reviews
From start of the first track to the last at almost 32 minutes of non stop laughter, Richard Pryor tells it like it is and the material is very dated, meaning that it is not very PC!! You have 14 tracks on this CD taken from different live shows.

If you are not thin skinned , Then get this CD !

Enjoy!

This is bascially a compilation of bits from the many previous albums that were put out by the Laff label in the 70's. Read more
