Biography

The Bee Gees were a British singing group consisting of three brothers: Barry Gibb and twins Robin Gibb and Maurice Gibb. Not only were they successful in their own right, with seven Grammys to their name, their body of work has been re-interpreted by a huge variety of other artists, from Elvis and Dolly Parton to Billy Corgan and Feist. Of their 23 albums, 125 million copies have been sold, and… Read more in Amazon's Bee Gees Store

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

The closest that the oft-misunderstood Brothers Gibb have come to staging a full-blown '90s comeback, Still Waters suffers a bit from some misguided attempts by big name pop producers David Foster, Hugh Padgham, and Arif Mardin to slot the trio into commercial urban pop styles. A handful of standout numbers like "Irresistible Force," "Smoke and Mirrors," and the majestically melancholy hit "Alone" make Still Waters worth a listen, recapturing the bittersweet brilliance of the Bee Gees' best work and demonstrating that these old pros have still got a few tricks up their sleeves. --Scott Schinder

5.0 out of 5 stars It's Not Too Late To Rediscover Them, May 3, 2003
By I. Gross Georg "imgeorg" (Edmond, Oklahoma USA) - See all my reviews
STILL WATERS the CD was a gift I received shortly after the death of Maurice Gibb. It is one of their last recordings, released in `97, a few years before THIS IS WHERE I CAME IN. The Bee Gees have gone the way of Led Zeppelin now, and smart people will make this recording a classic. Here are a few of my observations about the CD. I hope they'll be helpful to you.

ALONE/STILL WATERS: I think people tend read how other people describe a song and agree with it. I don't. I think ALONE is very Celtic-sounding. I hear bagpipes when I hear this song. It's also very folksy, even as it is a toe-tapper.

I SURRENDER/WITH MY EYES CLOSED/STILL WATERS: As a black teenager in the 70's I remember hearing Jive Talking on the Midnight Special (before the disco era ruined it) and realizing The Bee Gees had some definite black roots! Point of fact, they were doing rap before it became mainstream; they certainly pre-date Hall and Oates among the white groups experimenting with the sound. STILL WATERS RUN DEEP is also a lilting toe-tapper that shows me an early Motown influence with the use of the tambourine (How Sweet It Is), plus my ears hear the old Four Tops song of nearly the same name in the rhythm. These two honor their black influences, yet their originality comes through with crystal clarity.

These are hands-down my favorite tracks. The bass is kickin' and it brings me back to the days when I had a serious jones for Barry Gibb...and I wasn't the only one at my school who did, either!

IRRESISTIBLE FORCE/SMOKE AND MIRRORS: Poor Robin always sounds like someone who's in incredible pain, you almost want to shoot him to put him out of his mystery. ...Couple that with the fact that Robin's looks have improved 100-fold as he's gotten older, and you've got the true enigmatic figure in the group.

OBSESSIONS/MIRACLES HAPPEN: I read a reviewer that said the song "Obsessions" frightened them. Are they insane? Well, I'm not going to rate another review if that's how they really feel, but let the record show that I couldn't disagree more. This song, which could be covered by any number of boytoy groups out nowadays, to me has all the frightening elements of the Piglet movie. Now, Miracles Happen has more ominous undertones than the other. But again, most Bee Gees material is fairly tame. As for me, I love the vocal layering, even the synthesizer works, and I always dig Barry's vocal punctuations throughout.

CLOSER THAN CLOSE: I couldn't review this CD without a passing nod to Maurice, who does the lead for this song. I don't recall ever getting to hear his singing voice in a Bee Gees recording before, and I have to say unlike his twin, he has a very pleasant voice. I'm sorry he didn't get more opportunities to do more than a super-high falsetto harmony on most songs.

This recording is definitely a new favorite of mine, and I highly recommend it to those who hadn't listened to the Bee Gees for a while. Current Bee Gees fans bought it, regardless. I personally think it's wonderful to listen to a recording with the knowledge that the singers are playing real instruments and are ... good at it, too.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Last Studio Album of the Century, May 22, 2001
By Martin A Hogan "Marty From SF" (San Francisco, CA. (Hercules)) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
"Still Waters" closed out the Century as the Bee Gees last studio album. Featuring the big hit "Alone"; cuts "I Surrender", "Still Waters Run Deep" and "Smoke And Mirrors" could all have been big hits. "Irresistible Force" brings the famous trio in to a round-robin vocal that is truly unique. "My Lovers Prayer", "I Could Not Love You More" and "I Will" harken back to the power ballads the guys are so famous for. "Closer Than Close" and "Miracles Happen" seem out of step with the rest of the CD, but, hey, it's all good stuff.

Last Note: If you can find the CD single or IMPORT CD with "Rings Around The Moon" and "Love Never Dies" you are in for a real treat.

5.0 out of 5 stars really worth buying, March 1, 2000
By Martin Swart (Alexander Bay, Northern Cape South Africa) - See all my reviews
I'm sad to say that I first heard of the Bee Gees in November 1998 when they came to South Africa to do their "One Night Only" concert. Since then I've been a die-heart fan of them. Early 1999 my dad bought me the "One Night Only" cd of the show they did in Las Vegas in 1997. Soon after this I bought the "Still Waters" album and when I first heard songs like "I Could Not Love You More", "My Lover's Prayer" and "I Will", it almost brought a tear to my eyes. This songs is really beatiful but I still think "Paradis" of the "Living Eyes" album of 1981 is the most beatifulliest songs in the whole wide world. My favorites are "Alone", "I Could Not Love You More", "My Lover's Prayer", "I Will" and "Miracles Happen." I love the funky "I Surrender" and "With My Eyes Closed." Robin really sings of the truth on "Irresisteble Force" and "Obsessions" are a little scary but beatiful. As always, Maurice does his thing on "Closer Than Close" and the title track, "Still Waters Run Deep" also tells much truth. We would almost think that we don't know the Bee Gees, if we listen to the last song, "Smoke And Mirrors" which is also beatiful.

This is a great comeback album for the Bee Gees since their 1993 album, "Size Isn't Everything." Though they should've sang more of the tracks from the "Still Waters" album on the "One Night Only" concerts.

I think these three men, Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb will always be there with their great melodies and lyrics to fill our hearts with joy and happines.

Go Bee Gees, we all love you.
