5.0 out of 5 stars Taut, exciting performances, September 28, 2008

(REAL NAME)
Gardiner brings his period-instrument and historically informed style to two of Mozart's greatest and most familiar works, arguably among the greatest symphonies in the entire classical repertoire. The characteristics are what should be expected from Gardiner with the English Baroque Soloists: Very clean lines in the strings with little tremolo; winds, especially brass, and percussion out in front; and brisk tempos. The sound is much different from the kind of performance that had become standard by the mid-20th century -- a massive orchestra playing the music as it would play Mahler. Gardiner gives us the antidote to that anti-historic approach to Mozart.

Gardiner's performance of the g minor 40th symphony is thrilling -- it can make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. Gardiner takes it at break-neck speed. The sonata-allegro form 4th movement, especially, is fully of fast figure work in the strings, much in the lower strings, and it all comes out very cleanly despite the speed. Mozart's score calls for a repeat of the development and recapitulation sections of the movement (which, unusually, lacks a coda). This was a departure from the norm of sonata-allegro form composition in Mozart's day, and conductors today often skip the repeat. Gardiner honors it, as he should.
