5.0 out of 5 stars McKinney's Cotton Pickers 1929-1930, February 17, 2000
By John Berry (Pompano Beach, Florida) - See all my reviews
This is one of the finest CD's available featuring MKCP.

The highlight is "Cotton Picker's Scat" which features the great scat singing of George "Fathead" Thomas, who died so tragically in an auto crash before he was 30. From the first note to the last, it is smoooooth as silk.

While all selections here are wonderful, the brightest of the bright spots include "I'll Make Fun For You," "Words Can't Express The Way I Feel," "Then Someone's In Love" (the only waltz ever recorded by MKCP) and "Plain Dirt."

The personnel on these recordings included many great and classically trained musicians including Don Redman, John Nesbitt, Benny Carter, Todd Rhodes, Dave Wilborn and Cuba Austin, just to name a few.

These selections show exactly why MKCP was one of the greatest bands of their era! JB.
