5.0 out of 5 stars give that gal a spotlight !!!, February 14, 2008

(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
Fly Me to the Moon features several great songs Judy Garland performed on her legendary television series in the early 1960s. The sound is good although sometimes there's just a bit of surface noise. The artwork impresses me--that's a beautiful photo of Judy on the front cover of the insert.

"Sweet Danger" starts the album with Judy singing a rather beautiful and dramatic number. Judy handles the tempo and key changes like the pro that she always was and I really like that. "Fly Me To The Moon (In Other Words)" is a more upbeat, sweeter number that features Judy's vocals squarely in the spotlight; she sings this and even belts it out at times to make "Fly Me To The Moon (In Other Words)" a total masterpiece in her capable hands. Awesome!

"A Pretty Girl Milking Her Cow" comes from the movie Judy starred in called Little Nellie Kelly; and Judy delivers "A Pretty Girl Milking Her Cow" with great sensitivity and panache. The piano arrangement is very nicely done, too. I predict that you will enjoy "A Pretty Girl Milking Her Cow" very much.

"Happiness Is A Thing Called Joe" gets the royal treatment from Judy as she sings this without a superfluous note; Judy probably sang this with even more soul than most of her other songs because her own son is named Joe. Judy sings this flawlessly and it's always been one of my favorite Judy Garland songs. In addition, "If Love Were All" is a beautiful tune that Judy delivers with a singular beauty that truly stuns me; I really like Judy singing "If Love Were All."

"Down With Love" has Judy belting this out with all her might; and it works very well as Judy sings this a way nobody else ever could; the big band style musical arrangement enhances the natural beauty of this number even further. The album ends with Judy singing "A Cottage For Sale." While "A Cottage For Sale" is not my favorite song, Judy performs this so sweetly that I always listen closely--if Judy's singing it, that is!

Overall, Judy Garland fans will consider this a must-have for their collections; and people who enjoy classic pop vocals will also enjoy this album very much. I highly recommend it. This album is also pretty good if you're new to Judy Garland and you want just a few introductory numbers from her weekly 1960s television show to get better acquainted with her talents as an extraordinary singer.

5.0 out of 5 stars 10 incredible performances from Judy's television series, October 18, 2003

(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
The television season of 1963-64 gave the world The Judy Garland Show and, in so doing, left us many a powerful live performance from the greatest singer to ever live. Fly Me to the Moon collects ten songs from that season, every one of which touches you in a way no other singer could ever hope to duplicate. Sweet Danger is an unusual and fresh new track that would not seem to fit Judy's style, but of course Judy makes any song she sings her own, and the end result in this case is a strikingly edgy track filled with the kind of emotion Judy put into every song she ever sang. Fly Me to the Moon is a song everyone has heard, and Judy sings it better than anyone else before or since; it is also one of the songs Judy sang on the first aired episode of her television series. A Pretty Girl Milking Her Cow starts out slow and tender, gradually transforming itself into a jazz fest of a crowd-pleaser; Judy may be the only performer who could make her audience take this song as seriously as it should be taken.

Old Devil Moon is a great, brassy song that Judy sets fire to from its very first note; one of the more memorable performances from her television show, this is a song sure to excite the hearts of any Judy Garland fan. She really puts a charge in the Arlen/Harburg classic Down With Love. Happiness is a Thing Called Joe is probably one of my least favorite Garland songs, but its significance lies in the fact it is one of the songs Judy liked to sing for her children; written by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg, it is a tender, beautiful piece of music that many a sentimental Judy fan probably enjoys more than I do. Who doesn't know A Foggy Day? Judy delivers an emotionally poignant version of this famed Gershwin classic. Noel Coward wrote If Love Were All, and this wonderful song bleeds with emotion and tender longing in the able hands and voice of Judy. Too Late Now found a place in the first taping of Judy' new television series; no one could put as much of herself into a song of lost love and regret than Judy Garland. The most tender and wistful song of all, though, is saved for last; A Cottage For Sale is as sad a song you will ever hear, and the sense of emotion you feel through Judy's every word is almost indescribable.

I would dearly love to have been able to enjoy Judy Garland's television series when it aired, but I count myself fortunate indeed that so many classic performances from that one magical year are now available for me to enjoy any time I want to.

5.0 out of 5 stars a fan, an admirer, August 18, 2000
By dbphoenix (Phoenix, AZ United States) - See all my reviews
I had completely forgotten about A Cottage For Sale until I listened to the 5-CD boxed set - The Judy Garland Show - of which this is a part. Hearing it again after so many years was an extraordinary experience. Anyone who wonders what was so great about Judy Garland, or who wonders why so many people admired and continue to admire her, has only to listen to this song to understand.

Professional singers will listen to someone go through the lyrics and the melody, often in a very pleasant and pleasing way, but comment that the performer is not "singing the song", that is, going beyond the lyrics and the melody to convey the essence of the song itself. Few singers truly sing the song. Judy Garland sang the song better than anyone.
