3.0 out of 5 stars A Few Gems, But Nothing Memorable {3 Stars}, July 2, 2006
By Norfeest "Yes Yes Y'all" (Washington DC USA) - See all my reviews

I won't lie, I bought this album simply on the strength of Rakim's verse on "Hoodlum" (I think it plays during the end credits of the movie, I'm not sure though). Mobb Deep and Big Noyd do their thing and the production is dope, but I bought it so I could blend Rakim's verse on mixtapes, etc... The rest of the album isn't bad though. There are some great gems to be found here. "Gangsta Partna" from Cool Breeze feat. Big Boi (Outkast) is super tight. "Dirty The Moocher" from Wu Tang Clan (mostly Ol' Dirty) is vintage Ol' Dirty B*stard at his best. "So Good" feat. Raekwon and "Certainly" are a few R&B tunes on this soundtrack worth hearing. Also, I was taken by surprise by L.V. (the dude that sings on Coolio's hit "Gangsta's Paradise") taking on jazz. He actually does a pretty good job of it too.

The problem with this album is the heavy amount of filler. "I Can't Believe" from 112 & Faith Evans had a drowsying effect on me. "Zoom" "Harlem Is Home", and "Lucky Day" all fall under skip material for this listener. The rest of the album is pretty versatile and makes for a pretty good listen.

The soundtrack to Hoodlum is somewhat uneven, but the good tracks make this album woirth the money if you can find this used. Like I said earlier, there are plenty of gems here, but the rest is largely forgettable.

Standout Tracks: Dirty The Moocher, Hoodlum feat. Big Noyd & Rakim (My Favorite), Gangsta Partna feat. Big Boi, Certainly, Basin Street Blues, So Good feat. Raekwon

4.0 out of 5 stars For Hoodlums & Ladies, March 14, 2005
By Carltouis Stevenson (Angeles Mesa, Los Angeles) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This soundtrack is a combination of hip-hop/rap, r&b and jazz for lovers of good material from various artist. A lot of the material found on this soundtrack can be found on these artist's albums. The unknown, Davina, comes with some smooth r&b featuring Raekwon on "So Good". Harlem feels like home with Tony Rich's "Harlem Is Home" with a deep feeling of love with life. Not only that, it ended the cd perfectly.

5.0 out of 5 stars a great mix of sultry and uptempo
I love it. I go back to it every so often, from hip-hop to jazz to smooth R&B. An underrated must-have.
