5.0 out of 5 stars Great Record No One Knows About, November 10, 1998
By Ginorman@aol.com (Los Angeles, CA, USA) - See all my reviews
One of the best examples of the cross- pollenation between rural blues and country music. Shows how what we think of as mutually exclusive black and white forms share common roots and influences. Alot of fun to listen to. There are some "antiquated" racial attitudes in some of the songs as well as references to morphine and cocaine addiction if I remember correctly, but it's classic music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Bourbon Sippin' Music, January 13, 2004
This is a marvelous compilation of authentic, front-porch Americana. I live in North Carolina and hear my share of Bluegrass. If you're a fan of groups such as the Red Clay Ramblers, as I am, this will show you what their predecessors sounded like. True roots music. The recording is great, as well. Nary a hiss or pop, which is quite remarkable for recordings of this era. The engineers obviously embarked on a labor of love. Kudos to Sony for this collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars a brutal joy, June 10, 2002
By Timothy E. Barnes "Barnacle" (Alexandria, VA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
These songs were sung by men who wandered after will-o'-the-wisp,
past broken branches veiled in Spanish moss. Each song is a seance summoning ghosts of that which never happened, hiding in the smoke of a balding mountain. Songs that tremble like a sinners prayer. Disturbing but beautiful music.
