Beautiful Poetry, beautiful music, October 27, 2000
When I first bought this CD, I knew very little of Gilberto Gil. I was simply looking for something Brazilian. Now, i can only slap myself over the head for not discovering him sooner. The man combines intelligent lyrics covering a wide range of subjects with a diverse rhythem covering multiple musical styles. This is a CD to be enjoyed by all, no matter what your tastes are. I have never heard anyone sing about the internet and quantum theory as poetically as Mr. Gil. This CD, as with the numerous Gilberto Gil CD's i have purchased since this one, is the true essence of songwriting and expression.

Top quality Gil!, July 31, 2000
A gloriously mature CD from the Brazilian master, filled with treasures. Thank heavens that those who do not speak Portuguese will have translations of Gil's brilliant lyrics, which cover diverse topics from quantum theory to the true story surrounding a rescue (by one of Gil's band) of a drowning boy in Bahia. And the music, including a lovely guitar homage to Joao Gilberto that showcases Gil's instrumental skill, is equally marvelous, drawing from a number of different styles. Gil's voice retains its beauty, warmth, and playfulness, especially on "Pela Internet"--a reference to the song "Pelo Telefone," the very first recorded samba--where he teasingly imitates Mick Jagger as he sings "I can't get no...connection." Highly recommended.

Pure genius, June 29, 2000
Gilberto Gil is a godsend. After wallowing a few years in drum-machine pop in the 1980's (which, by drum machine pop standards was still good), Gil comes out with a beautifully-made ode to science, art, nature and technology. This CD contains 20 songs--and there's not a bad one in the bunch! On its own, this CD is amazing, but also remember that this CD came out in 1997--exactly 30 years after his first album, "Louvação" (recently re-released). If the likes of Paul McCartney made good, quality music with integrity such as Gil after 30 years, pop music would not be in the sorry state it is today. My favorites are "O Mar e o Lago", "Dança de Shiva" and "Estrela". And don't forget "Pela Internet"--a better song about the Net than any Internet-generation artist could create! Do yourself a favor--GET THIS CD!
