This Knoxville, Tennessee, quintet travels to an unexplored corner of the guitar-pop universe and beams back a tuneful, edgy, and amazingly fresh third album. --Jeff Bateman

5.0 out of 5 stars 1993 Release - 13 YEARS OLD?, April 3, 2006
By Dubya Too (Texas, USA) - See all my reviews
Timeless is more appropriate. I remember walking in to but Matthew Sweet's "Girlfriend", and the latest REM release and bought "Pain... " as an afterthought after reading a good review. It was the best of the three and still gets pretty heavy rotation. It's a lyrical & musical masterpiece. The noted Pop tunes are great but the slower more melodic songs always stood out for me. "Geography" and "Wasting Time" are by far my favorites with "Being Simple" folling close behind. A smart, well-executed album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun Album.... suddenly hearing it places, August 11, 2003
By A Customer
I bought this CD over 6 years ago and all of a sudden I am hearing "Pain Makes You Beautiful" (the song) during my lunchbreak... a little disoreinting but still a pleasant tune. I recommend this album for anyone who enjoy silly lyrics and fun, boppy tunes.... The best being "Ugly on the Outside".

5.0 out of 5 stars "There's a gentle artifice to loving...", April 5, 2006
This is a great work that somehow slipped through the cracks of the 90s alternative music conciousness. The CD is consistent, the songs are well-written, nicely-arranged, and get under your skin. (quirky and still tuneful) 13 years later the songs are not dated.
Hard to get the chorus of "Ugly on the Outside" out of your head once you hear it. "Wasting Time" is a gem of a song, but there are many other great ones on here. In fact I can't think of a record of that time that could succeed on both MTV and VH1. A strong record can do that because of the breadth of the material, a weak one can (Cracked Rear View, Better than Ezra) because of lowest common denominator blandness. "Pain" falls into the 1st category.

I urge anyone who has not heard this to gamble and at least buy a cheap copy from amazon. Odds are you will like it.

This is a personal fave of the early 90s along w/ Buffalo Tom's "Let Me Come Over", MBV "Loveless", "In Utero", "Definitely Maybe", PJ Harvey's "Dry", "Auctung Baby", "Check Your Head", "Automatic for the People", "The Bends", etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm still falling
No reviews on this since '06. Just a quick line to say it's now '09 and this album is still every bit as remarkable as it has ever been.
