Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

If there was justice in the music world, the first album by the Los Angeles quartet the Muffs would have been just as successful as the debut by their labelmates, Green Day. Of course, there isn't and it wasn't. Co-founder Melanie Vammen left the band, Kim Shattuck regrouped as a trio, and the Muffs are back with Blonder and Blonder. The album has its punk-pop charms- including rollicking tunes such as "Agony" and "Oh Nina"-but most of the songs simply aren't as memorable as those in the first batch. -- Jim DeRogatis

5.0 out of 5 stars Yeah, this is good stuff, October 9, 2001
By Sam (Milwaukee, WI) - See all my reviews
This album has to be one of the most refreshing punk records in recent memory. It comes off with a certian unique freshness that the genre has been lacking for quite some time.
The album definately is not lacking in production. Big crunchy guitars, clean drums, and crisp vocals carry through 'til the end. This might turn some hardliners off, but for the rest of us it is nothing less that a sonic treat.
But what definately seperates this from all the bland punk music out there is Kim's vocals. If you haven't heard her before, picture the sweetness of 60's-girl mixed with the snideness of '77 brit-punk and that is what you'll get. And then, out of nowhere comes "the scream" (the best in the biz & used to it's fullest potential on this recording)... which you just have to hear for yourself I suppose.
I've heard a few other Muffs albums in my day, and i think this is their best effort to date. Start here for sure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Hard-Core Alterna-Pop, June 17, 1999
By A Customer
I have no idea how to classify the Muffs, but The CD is EXCELLENT. "On and On" and "I need a face" are probably my two favorite, Alternative powerpop with an attitude. I am just suprised more of the alternative radio stations have not picked up on this. (The Muffs are a must-see Live band!)

I LIKE the screaming, but it's not just screams. It's nice melody and harmonies and catchy tunes. It ROCKS!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thankfully a new drummer and now one girl!
Much much much better drummer. And no one needed the other girl on bulky stiff rhythm guitar. Much more concise now and spirited. No one will break Kim's spirit.
