4.0 out of 5 stars Underrated artist who deserves airplay, May 14, 2000
By John Patrick Moehring (NORWALK, CT United States) - See all my reviews
Every so often, my local country station deigned to play Paul Brandt's "I Do." Whenever I heard it, I turned up the volume and marveled at Paul's heart-felt rendering of dynamite lyrics ("I promise to be your best friend" is a line that says it all and says it well). Admittedly, I also wondered whether Paul's other material was as worthwhile as "I Do." Being naturally skepticial, I refrained time and again from purchasing any of his CDs (I've been burned in the past by so-called "one-hit wonders"). Then fate intervened. I met the girl of my dreams, the woman I knew I would some day marry. The very thought of marriage called to mind Paul's "I Do" (among other prospective wedding songs), and it was not long before I broke down and purchased "Calm Before the Storm." My impression after many listens? A very fine effort, indeed. Beyond the stirring "I Do," "I Meant to Do That" ranks highly in my book. What a beautiful, heart-breaking song. The title track likewise finds Paul in fine form, and "On the Inside" is a welcome song inasmuch as it points out that internal beauty is often more important than good looks alone. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this CD to anyone who has tired of the overexposed artists of contemporary country radio.

5.0 out of 5 stars one of my best cd, December 20, 2004
I bought Paul Brandt's Calm Before The Storm six years ago, and believe it or not, I still play this CD almost everyday, providing that I have some other 1,500 country CD to choose from. The first time I heard his deep, sultry voice, I felt like ' oh my god, this must be my most favorite CD EVER, and I was right. Apart from his singing talent, he also possesses perfect writing skill, as you can hear from the title track 'Calm Before The Storm'. There was no filler song on the entire album; all song was great. The only weak point for this CD, as far as I can tell, is that it stays too long in my CD player, and I have little time to listen to my other CD!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars several good songs, but a little uneven
Like so many country albums, this one is uneven. There are some excellent tracks and some that are so-so. I don't think there are any that are "bad," maybe just one. Read more
