Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

On this live album, the Battlefield Band is joined by five different guests. Recorded during three concerts at Queen's Hall in Edinburgh, the album features a generous helping of 28 different songs and instrumental dance tunes, but the highlights occur when the guests visit the band on stage. Eric Rigler, a Californian featured on the "Braveheart" soundtrack, plays the smaller, sweeter uillean pipes in harmony and counterpoint with Iain MacDonald's bagpipes on two songs and three tunes. Alison Kinnaird, a frequent collaborator in the past, joins the Battlefield Band again to add her Scottish harp and arrangement to the traditional air, "Tuireadh Iain Ruaidh." Flutist Seamus Tansey adds an Irish flavor on two tunes cowritten with MacDonald. And the Battlefield Band joins Glasgow's Radio Sweethearts for a version of Dave Dudley's truck-driving classic, "Six Days on the Road." --Geoffrey Himes

Product Description

Recorded during their three concerts in Edinburghs Queens Hall during the Edinburgh International Festival, not only does it show them at their live best, but there is a lot of newly recorded material, plus - and this is a big plus - it includes tracks recorded with their guests - Alison Kinnaird, Seamus Tansey, Eric Rigler, Kate Rusby and The Radio Sweethearts.

5.0 out of 5 stars magnificent, September 21, 1998
By A Customer
This cd was my first full introduction to Battlefield Band, and man-alive, I was hooked within a couple of minutes. Deeply rooted in Scottish tradition (and Irish, as well), the lads even manage to do an American country standard better than the original. This record shows the band's energy and strengths in marvelous fashion and ends it all with the rousing Top Tier set. Amazing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Traditional Celtic music mixed with modern technology, June 20, 1998
By A Customer
As an avid fan of the group for the past 17 yrs, I've seen them transition through different members, but still keeping alive their particular style and flavor. This is the last recording of the group before another major transition took place and is an excellent example of their ability to combine traditional music with modern technology.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mellow, Gentle, and Excellent, June 17, 2002
I found out about the Battlefield Band by doing a random search on Amazon. And this was their first album I bought -- for no particular reason. It was an excellent choice. It's not as energetic as some of their other work, as they use mostly the fiddle, whistles, and even a harp on slow, soothing songs. The pace does pick up, however, with the last four pieces.

My personal favorites are #1, 2, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 12 - 15. Track 14 was quite an unexpected treat. It starts off in the traditional country style, but after about 3 minutes it goes Scottish country. I love the bluegrass bagpipes!

This album is a great introduction to the band with music that will never get old. It's not quite representative of their current style, but it is no doubt worth buying.
