Whether he's collaborating with longtime lyricist Bernie Taupin or other songwriters (such as his Lion King partner, Tim Rice) Elton John has written and performed some of the most cherished love songs in the pop-music canon. This career-spanning retrospective spotlights that particular aspect of his artistry, focusing on classics such as "Your Song," "Believe," "The One," "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word," and "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me." The album takes a rather expansive view of the concept--there are also tracks here such as "Daniel," which is less a love song than a tribute to a wounded war veteran, and a live take of "Candle in the Wind," which, kiddies, was once a song about Marilyn Monroe, not Princess Diana. John's Lion King triumphs--"Can You Feel the Love Tonight" and "Circle of Life"--are included, as are a pair of new tracks, "You Can Make History (Young Again") and "No Valentines." This was my first and still is my favorite Elton John album - it is practically like a greatest hits collection. The songs are extremely relaxing and romantic. If I were to suggest one album to someone who was interested in owning an Elton John CD, this would be the one I recommend.

This album is great. I think the choice of songs for an album titled "Love Songs" is perfect, because everyone knows that not all love is romantic love. There's brotherly love, which is reflected in the song "Daniel". Fatherly love for his unborn child, as expressed in "Blessed", and the love or infatuation that someone can feel for a movie star, like Marilyn in "Candle in the Wind", and also love for the Earth and mankind as shown in "Circle of Life". And no one is better at singing such songs, as Elton, or at writing such lyrics as Bernie. And to top it all off, this album includes two new songs, "You can make history (young again)", and "No Valentines". A must for all true EJ fans.

Elton has a way of bringing his music to life by his awesome lyrics. It stirs up emotions in me that are so strong that I find myself getting teary-eyed listening to them.
