Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording
One year before the tragic plane crash that killed Lynyrd Skynyrd main man Ronnie Van Zant and guitarist Steve Gaines, they added Gaines to the mix to revive the three-guitar sound that had worked so well for the group on tracks such as "Free Bird." In 1976 the band toured and released this double live album featuring such signature songs as "Gimme Three Steps, "Tuesday's Gone," "Saturday Night Special," "Sweet Home Alabama," and, of course, a blistering 11-and-a-half-minute version of "Free Bird." A cool cover of J.J. Cale's "Call Me the Breeze" adds a little variety. It's easy to see why this band dominated the rock charts in the '70s. --Lorry Fleming

5.0 out of 5 stars Bring all my mules out here & kick 'em one time!, March 6, 2000
By Michael Curtis (Nashville, TN USA) - See all my reviews
That's one of the funny lines Skynyrd singer-songwriter Ronnie Van Zant yells out during one of the many killer guitar solos on this kick-a$$ live CD. I truly can't say enough about this CD. On the 4 Skynyrd studio CDs prior to this one, Van Zant proved he was an incredible lyricist. On this one, he proved he was just as good a frontman. Being a guitar player myself, I always loved the fact that Skynyrd is/was a 3-guitar band. Guitarists Allen Collins, Gary Collins & then-newcomer Steve Gaines all played their a$$es off on this CD. Very inspiring! There's also some great drumming by Artimus Pyle, & of course some awesome piano work by Billy Powell. I love all of the '70's Skynyrd CDs, but this one's probably my favorite one. ENJOY!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Original Skynyrd Live ! This ones a MUST !, March 29, 2000
Ronnie Van Zant ,Allen Collins,Gary Rossington,Steve Gaines,Billy Powell,Artimus Pyle, and Leon Wilkeson This was the line up of Skynyrd at it's live peak and it was captured on this release by the ledgendary Tom Dowd. Originally released on vinyl in 1976 This included the best cuts the band had to offer: Saturday Night Special,Sweet Home Alabama,T for Texas(this one smokes !) and of course Freebird.

This was recorded at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta and the band worked their collective a-s's off to make a live recording of their peak performances. Great vocals, searing guitars, and Artimus Pyles'perfect timing on drums makes this a truly scorching Cd. Along with Street Suvivors this is the peak of an incredible band. TURN IT UP LOUD !

5.0 out of 5 stars southern masterpiece, May 21, 2001
By William A. Davis (Ridgecrest, CA. United States) - See all my reviews
growing up in the 70's was perhaps the best time to grow up (except the '50's) for rock and roll. Especially the south, where bands like Skynyrd, was the king and the Allman's were the bible from which they studied. "One more from the road", sounds as good as the live cd's of today, and that album was cut when I was 13 years old,and now I am 38. Being from that area and era, one can't help but be proud and fall in love with its harmonies and instrumentals. Its only once in a lifetime that such artists come together and you are around to witness their greatness. May you live in our hearts forever......
