Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

This intriguing artifact finds Rose Maddox, one of the matriarchs of the Bakersfield sound, exploring unfamiliar territory. As a honky-tonk singer, she was apt to sink her teeth into a phrase and worry it about a bit before digesting. Bluegrass demands that you chew up a verse and spit it out. Maddox fronting a group led, at times, by Bill Monroe is a little like having Lightnin' Hopkins play guitar in one of Dizzy Gillespie's combos. Of course, such an arrangement implies at the very least that no one is just going through the motions, and the results for Maddox are never less than interesting. --Steven Stolder

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!, April 23, 1999
By A Customer
I have this CD and it is great. I program from it regularly on my bluegrass program in Louisville, KY, WFPK. A number of my listeners learned about Rose this way and fell in love with her. This is an excellent CD with some TOP names backing this project. Don Reno and Red Smiley among others. If you are a bluegrass fan you will like it. Berk Bryant, The Country Gentleman, WFPK, Louisville.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you like your bluegrass fast this is a must-have album., May 6, 2002

Rose Maddox is a musical wildcat. Fronting her brothers band she sang western swing, hillbilly country and honky tonk like no one else. As a solo artist she tried bluegrass at the request of Bill Monroe himself. The result? - Simply one of the greatest, fastest and wildest bluegrass albums ever made.
