In my usual 5 star reviews of christmas albums here on Amazon, it may often seem like every 5 star rated album is as good as any other 5 star rated album. However, that is not the case at all as there are only a handful of albums (out of over 200 in my collection, mostly cd's) that I would put into the 'classic' category, that is, the best of the best where every single song is fantastic. I think I usually show this in my reviews but perhaps not every time. In any case, this 1957 album by FRANK SINATRA, A JOLLY CHRISTMAS FROM FRANK SINATRA, is one of those 'classic' christmas albums.

While every single song on this album is a gem of a song, of special note is THE CHRISTMAS WALTZ which is probably the christmas song FRANK SINATRA is mostly known for. And for good reason. It's a beautiful and powerful song that creates a deep late day/evening christmas mood. While I also really like an instrumental take of the song by the LIVING STRINGS, FRANK SINATRA'S version could still be the best and is for sure the definitive version of the song.

MISTLETOE AND HOLLY is another definitive christmas song for SINATRA that he made famous (though JACK JONES has a version that is probably as nice).

Another song that I like just as much as THE CHRISTMAS WALTZ in FRANK'S take of the song, I'LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS. This is probably the deepest song on the album and has a kind of 'romantic mood' style to it, it's just beautiful and almost haunting, including the instrumental beginning with the wonderful orchestra but the whole song is just fantastic and kinda haunting, all in a late day/evening christmas atmosphere if you can picture that. This version would be in the running for the best version of the song ever.

JINGLE BELLS is also fantastic and has a really neat orchestra backing. The backing chorus also shines on this.

THE CHRISTMAS SONG, HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS, and WHITE CHRISTMAS are also nothing short of spectacular. All versions that can hold their own with the best of them.

On the religious side and the second half of the album, every song is a masterpiece as well. IT CAME UPON A MIDNIGHT CLEAR and SILENT NIGHT are fantastic but so are all others.

All I can say is that this is a definite christmas 'crooner' classic that is in my small pile of 'crooner' christmas classics and so if you like PERRY COMO, BING CROSBY, and other crooners christmas albums, then this is one that is as much (and sometimes even more) recommended as the best of them. This is also easily FRANK SINATRA'S best christmas album.

A Jolly Christmas from Frank Sinatra is an essential record to add to your Christmas collection. Trust me .... it doesn't get any better than this ! Happy Holidays !

A great mix of contemporary and traditional Christmas songs sung by one of the great singers of our time: what more could one ask for? (I note that some of the reviews here appear to refer to albums other than this one, as they include references to songs not on this album.)
