Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Tina Turner's phenomenal reclamation of her stardom is perfectly chronicled on Simply the Best. With the exception of the Phil Spector epic "River Deep, Mountain High," everything included here comes from 1983 on. Turner's iconic voice and bluesy earnestness surface on a cover of Al Green's "Let's Stay Together." She brings a moody sensuality to "I Can't Stand the Rain." Equally adept at rock, soul, gospel, and R&B, Turner makes ordinary songs such as "Typical Male" and "Private Dancer" into extraordinary recordings. There are actually better Tina albums than Simply the Best, but it stands as a useful compilation of her comeback hits. --Steve Gdula

5.0 out of 5 stars Tina is simply the best!!!, February 4, 2003
I love Tina Turner, she's an incredble singer who has everything, style, voice, rhythm and incredible legs.
"Simply the best" is called one of the best years greatest hits albums. It was realesed in 1991 and includes some of Tina's greatest hits (I say some because actually there are a couple missing), it also includes 4 new songs (by 1991), one of them is a duo with Rod Steward. This album debuted at #1 in the British charts and remainded in the Top 50 for 3 straight years, the album was certified Platinum in the US and Multi-Platinum all over Europe, selling almost 10 million copies.
The songs are:

1-THE BEST.
The song made to #1, was nominated for a Grammy and it's considerated a classic.
2-BETTER BE GOOD TO ME.
Reached #5 in 1985 and won a Grammy award.
3-I CAN'T STAND THE RAIN.
Reached #4 in Europe.
4-WHAT'S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT.
A #1 hit that was the best song of 1984 and won 3 Grammy awards.
5-I DON'T WANNA LOSE YOU.
A hit in 1990 peaking at #6 in the British charts.
6-NUTBUSH CITY LIMITS (the 90's version).
Written by Tina in 1973, the song made it to #23.
7-WHAT YOU GET IS WHAT YOU SEE.
From 1986, the song reached #14 in 1987.
8-LET'S STAY TOGETHER.
This song opened the market walls in 1984 after her divorce, the song was a big hit, getting a Grammy nomination and peaking at #3.
9-RIVER DEEP-MOUNTAIN HIGH.
From 1966, this song was written by The Beatles songwritter/producer, Phil Spector. In the US peaked at #88 and at #2 in Europe. It's a real classic.
10-STEAMY WINDOWS.
Peaked at #13 and recived a Grammy nomination in 1990.
11-TYPICAL MALE.
This #1 hit also recived a Grammy nomination.
12-WE DON'T NEED ANOTHER HERO.
Theme from the 1985 film "Mad Max III", the song peaked at #2 and recived a Grammy nomination. Actually another song from Mad max, performanced by Tina got the Grammy.
13-PRIVATE DANCER.
What a song...was written by hit singer Mark Knopher. The song made it to #7 in 1985.
14-LOOK ME IN THE HEART.
A beautiful pop song that was realesed only in Europe peaking at #26.
15-IT TAKES TWO.
This is a duet that Tina made in 1990 with Rod steward, the song was a big hit in Europe but never arrived to the US.
16-I WANT YOU NEAR ME.
Was a new song for this album.
17-WAY OF THE WORLD:
This was the first single for this album, the song made it to #3.
18-LOVE THING.
Was the socond and last single of the album.
I just gave a commercial detail of this album. I don't say much about Tina, because it's all music history.
Here are some big hits missing as the Grammy winners: "Addicted to love", "Back were you started","One of the living" and the #1 "Proud Mary".
There are also are Top 40 hits such as: "Two peolple", "Show some respect", "Foreign affair", "Be tender with me baby"and the Top 15 "It's only love" (a duet with Bryan Adams) between others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Momentos of a legend, October 17, 2000
What Aretha Franklin is to R&B, and what Billie Holiday is to jazz, Tina Turner is to rock and roll...simply THE distinctive female voice of the genre. And this generous 18-track compilation offers up the very best of her platinum-selling, Grammy-laden solo career.

Over half of Turner's landmark solo debut "Private Dancer" is represented here: first there's the #1 worldwide smash "What's Love Got to Do With It," and the hit's midtempo marriage of rock and soul is just as thrilling as it was upon release. The lush title track will always be a smooth winner, and who can forget "Better Be Good to Me," one of the hardest hitting female rockers in memory? To hear Tina wail "did you think I'd just accept you in blind faith? Don't shout, baby!" is to guarantee yourself chills. Two spectacular covers from the album are included as well: Al Green's "Let's Stay Together" and Ann Peebles' "I Can't Stand the Rain." It might seem arrogant of Turner to tackle the signature tunes of two R&B legends...until of course you hear her sing them with such joy and affection.

Elsewhere you have superb matches of singer and song (the country-tinged "What You Get is What You See," the pop workout "Typical Male," the Bonnie Raitt-flavored "Steamy Windows") as well as some lukewarm compositions that are saved by Turner's unstoppable fire ("Look Me in the Heart" and the "What's Love Got to Do With It" rewrite, "We Don't Need Another Hero"). Of the three new tracks only "Way of the World" is pedestrian; "I Want You Near Me" adds a delicious dose of funk and "Love Thing" is one of her grittiest rockers to date.

The inclusion of "River Deep Mountain High," recorded for producer Phil Spector in the 60's, is a nice idea, but the "90's Version" (translation: club mix) of "Nutbush City Limits" is just wrong; the original's wah-wah guitar and itchy rhythm are sorely missed in the face of synthesized kick drums and hi-hats. Another error is the omission of "Two People," the silky smooth ballad single from her album "Break Every Rule." But considering we're treated to over an hour's worth of fiery, passionate performances from one of rock's true legends, such missteps are easily forgiven.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Disc :), February 1, 2005
I do not understand why the reviewer below claimed Tina Turner is a Whitney Houston wannabe when Tina Turner's career started before Whitney was even born. And most of the hits on this compilation were released before Whitney Houston even hit it big. The review was ignorance in its purest form and it is the most pointless and ill-advised review I've ever seen. Its not good to make blanket statements about things you don't knmow. :)

I am a huge fan of both Tina and Whitney and it is clear to anyone who knowsanything about them that they are totally different and do not try to copy each other in any way shape or form. They are two different types of superstars. Tina Turner has sold almost 70 million albums since the 80s, she has also sold more concert tickets than any other female artist in rock history (yes even more than Madonna - and that only includes the concert sales since the 80s.). Tina Turner also made history in 1988 by having the largest paying concert attendance (182,000 people in Rio Di Janerio) for a SINGLE PERFORMER (not just female) and was also put in the 1989 Guiness Book of Records for it. when Tina Turner did her final cocnert tour in 2000 she was the highest grossing tour act in America, grossing over $80 million and beating out even NSync, Britney and other very popular acts.

I can go on and on about Tina Turner's achievements that CLEARLY set her apart from Whitney Houston. Tina Turner came before Whitney, and Tina (as well as Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, Stevie Wonder and more) is one of the artists that helped pave the way for artists like Whitney to have the incredible success that she has had. Whitney has had an amazing career including album sales of 120 million and 4 smash Silver Screen hits. The older artists helped pave the way to help her be able to carve her niche in the world of popular music.

This is a fantastic album. The new 4 tracks on this album at the time were very refreshing and added something new to the album. She does leave off a lot of hits such as "One of The Living". The DVD component to this is fantastic. For a more complete collection of her hits you are better off getting her new "All The Best" collection released in February 2005.
