Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording

Kenny G is often quoted as defending his crowd-pleasing sound as instrumental pop, not jazz (despite having taken his turn at the music of Ellington, Monk, and other masters on 1999's Classics in the Key of G). Whatever--you certainly know by now whether or not you like this stuff. The multiplatinum smooth-sax man, though, has charted a steady course of blandness broken only by the occasional obnoxious foray into something he seems to think is funk. This CD of popular favorites brings every emotion down to the level of the Weather Channel-ready "Songbird," which made G a radio staple in 1987: whether accompanying Sinatra via technology or defacing the memory of Sam Cooke with the egregious Michael Bolton, it's all white noise. --Rickey Wright

5.0 out of 5 stars If you hate Kenny G's music so much, why are you here?, January 1, 2000
By Karen (Palm Desert, CA United States) - See all my reviews
My goodness, it's hard to believe how mean-spirited so many of you people out there are. If you don't like the album, then say you don't like the album. But, PLEASE, stop with the name-calling and low pot-shots. Kenny G is a man who plays his kind of music, which many of us happen to enjoy. If you don't, so what? If it's not what you would call "jazz," so what? It is what it is-Good music! And these are some of his best songs. If you don't like him, then go review artists whose albums you like, and give Kenny G and his fans a break from your tiresome cruel comments.

5.0 out of 5 stars Who Cares If It Is Pop or Jazz? It's Great Music!, October 4, 2000
I'm shocked and furious about what people have said about Kenny G and his music. For those who appreciate and like Mile Davis, it's OK. I do too. But please stop putting up big music terms and pretending to be expert. Please stop fluffing and criticizing Kenny G. Music is meant to be entertaining, relaxing, and helping us to get away from the outside world. To me, Kenny G has brought us, one after another, smoothing and soul-touching melodies. "Songbird", "Sentimental",... These are tunes that have touched our souls and renewed our minds. Kenny G had written a song for an Asian artist Andy Lau in 1997 and the song itself sold over 5 million in Asia alone. That particular single, however, had never been released in the US. To respond to previous reviews, is it really that important to draw the line between pop and/or jazz? Why do people have to pinpoint and fault-find and throw out all these pots shots? Kenny G stands for great music for me, and many fans.
