Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording
This is the first album ever recorded of duets between Hawaiian acoustic steel and slack-key guitars. Isaacs, whose professional career began in 1948, cut electric steel duets in the '50s with his brother Atta and with Gabby Pahinui. He usually serves up a very quiet kind of reverie; even his "hot" playing, on songs like this CD's "Hula Blues," demonstrates softness and subtlety. The young Kuo's style works better as support than when he's out front. Together, they not only conjure up a bygone era in Hawaiian music, but they bring it into modern times. --John Morthland

5.0 out of 5 stars Just buy it, October 6, 1999

I own about 10 Hawaiian music CDs, and this one is my all-time favorite. It's perfectly relaxing and mellow. Just hearing the first chord is enough to (mentally) transport me to a secluded beach on Maui.

5.0 out of 5 stars This music will transport you into another beautiful world., December 4, 1998
By A Customer
This recording is an absolute gem. Two unique forms of Hawaiian guitar music, slack key and Hawaiian steel, are combined and played by two masters from hawaii. If you enjoy acoustic guitar, dobro, or blue grass finger picking music, this CD is a must. If you like to listen to Spanish or acoustic jazz guitar, this CD is a must. If you enjoy Hawaii, or maybe you have never heard true Hawaiian guitar music, this CD is a must. The recording is very high quality and captures the subtleties of both musicians and their instruments.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hawaiian Tough, July 8, 2005
The best example of Ki ho`alu and Steel Guitar existing. I fell for this the first time I heard it and would love to see more similar recordings. Unfortunately Uncle Barney has passed and Dancing Cat (George Winston) has folded its tent. George Kuo is still touring and producing wonderful ki ho`alu, currently with Aaron Mahi and Martin Pahinui.
