5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best bands you've never heard of, November 25, 2001
I don't remember what originally compelled me to pick up a tape of this EP (Rag & Bone, songs 1-6) and album (Cataract, the rest of the CD), but I still listen to it often enough that I bought the CD recently. The Walkabouts are difficult to categorize; their music draws on so many influences that it becomes a sound all their own. "The Anvil Song" is a full-tilt, piano-driven rocker; "Bones of Contention" is a catchy tune that you almost have to sing along with (I like the deceptively simple lyrics); "Home As Found" has some nifty slide guitar work; and "Smokestack" features funky horn effects. This album is like a sampler of many different styles, but it doesn't sound disjointed. The band puts their own stamp on each variation, helped considerably by Carla Torgerson's incredible, distinctive voice. The lyrics are invariably intelligent and thought-provoking; "Wherebouts Unknown" and "Medicine Hat" are particular standouts. I also really like "Specimen Days," which is odd and faintly ominous, but also quite lovely. I must have listened to this album a hundred times, and I'm still discovering new nuances. If you like unique, well-crafted music of any genre, you will find something to like on this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my all-time favorite albums!, September 18, 2006

(REAL NAME)
Totally worth the price for Rag and Bone all by itself. Somehow this band slipped under the radar during the early Sub Pop days. Fantastic, moody, charged folk/rock/punk...Neil Young crossed with the Mekons...but even better. Beautiful vocals by Carla and Chris...harmonies and such combined with an insistent jagged edged instrumentation. Oh wait....did I mention that some of the best songwriting around resides on this disc? Aah heck, just by the dang thing.
