I'm lov'n this cd..., March 20, 2000
I first heard the "emarald alley" track on the DJ kicks Thievery Corporation cd which I love and made a mental note to look out for this band...but then, after months, I never heard anything about them, so I decided to investigate on Amazon.com. I then oredered the cd and can't stop listening to it...I love the mix of sounds randing from spanish guitar to the sitar. The songs are incredibly cool and the band's sound is all their own. It definitely has that global lounge groove to it, but in a good way, as opposed to a contrived one. Unfortunatly I don't think many will read this review since there are so few others who have left their opinions, but if you do happen to read this, please at least listen to the tracks on your computer...this cd is great!

Excellent full-length by UBO, December 1, 1999
Originally my review of this release was 4 stars; I figured I'd update it with 5. As great as this disc was to begin with, I've only found myself appreciating it more over time; which you certainly can't say with a lot of acts. One thing that has continued to make this album, and UBO itself, stand out for me is that I listen to a LOT of acid jazz/downtempo/e-lounge/etc. and eventually much of it becomes mush that all sounds the same. Never so for UBO. Their sound is unique to them, and it isn't afraid to happily stray off into all kinds of odd and unexpected places. These guys aren't afraid to cross boundaries, and perhaps even make a point of it - it's always a musical adventure for these people. Furthermore, speaking of boundaries I guess, their sound actually comes off as more "worldly" - as in, their musical perspective is hardly enveloped in the tiny subset of electronic:acid jazz:downtempo. There are many Latin influences, social/political interests and lyrics, and a real variety of moods and emotions. When an act stands out for me this long, and only grows on me, well, it's a keeper. Get it and keep it for ye'self too.

I got this album on a whim, and I could not have been happier with taking a chance. When i saw it on here i deemed that it needed a review. This album is a wonderful mix of down-tempo breakbeats, spine-tingling sitar, and indian flavored music, along with a good mixture of smooth jazz, and other eclecticisms. Anyone who likes trip-hop, acid jazz, and similar music should check this out.
