Havergal Brian's shorter works tend to be light-hearted, blithe--your basic crowd-pleasers.
Comedy Overture (of 1962) is one of these, very reminiscent of Holst and Bliss. His larger works are more serious and somewhat demanding of both audience and performer(s). Brian's instrument was the violin, and his early symphonies emphasize it. The Violin Concerto (of 1934) focuses on the violin's melodic range rather than the pyrotechnics that can be achieved with the instrument. Conservative in scope, it's nonetheless a delight. Symphony 18 is very short (15 minutes) and hints of Hindemith. Not a bad thing. A good place to start with Brian.
