the 4th crusade's twin, January 25, 2002
i love bolt thrower. when you hear them for the first time, they might sound like a boring, run-of-the-mill death band, but at further inspection you'll find that they sound like no one but bolt thrower. it might seem boring, because these days death metal has become much more ferocious and brutal than it was 11 years ago when bolt was in their prime. their style is disciplined, sustained, and full bodied. the solos are a little insane, but the motion of the songs are forceful and deliberate. "warmaster" is not as raw as "realm of chaos" but it is second only to their masterpiece "the 4th crusade" which warmaster emulates on a song to song basis. and i see nothing wrong with that... stay true to your roots and your fans will love you for it. this is great, early 90's death metal. i recommend buying warmaster first, just so you will be in complete awe when you buy the 4th crusade and hear it's beauty.

A Death Metal Classic, May 5, 2005
Nowadays that death metal is in a serious creative crisis, albums like Warmaster sound stronger than ever. Bolt Thrower's war metal is brutal, original, unforgetable, merciless. While their previous 2 albums (In Battle There is No Law and Realm of Chaos) were hardly polished products, while still being good, Warmaster was their first accomplished release. Bolt Thrower like no one else capture in music the brutal monstrosity that is war. Their songs are like unrelentless machine-gun hail, without resorting to speed for the sake of speed. I guess this is what other reviewers refer to by 'monotony'. Yes, you won't get hyper-technical never-repeat-the-same-note-twice sillyness. That is not what Bolt Thrower is about. It's about great riffs that will make you headbang till your neck goes stiff. In a market where 90% of the bands are indistinguisheable, you will never mistake Bolt Thrower with someone else. Their sound is low, their drums perfect for the type of music, the vocals ideal, and the guitarwork fantastic. The production is crips and lets you distinctly hear every instrument. Get Warmaster and ...For Victory, crank up the volume, and be annihilated by the war machine that is Bolt Thrower!

Underrated Death Metal Masterpiece, July 14, 2006
Bolt Thrower is a band that I believe deserved a bunch more credit for what they have done over the past almost 20 years. With their 3rd album, "Warmaster", the band further develops their sound and steers more towards an epic direction. "Realm of Chaos", their sophomore album, was an album that focused more on grindcore than death metal. This is where the band breaks through and assaults.
The vocals really tend to stand out, as they are dark, but not the infamous "Cookie Monster" growl. And with the recruitment of a talented female bassist and amazing guitars and blastbeats, this is something I can't really describe. Check it out for yourself. If you enjoy bands like Obituary and Pestilence, buy this.
