Editorial Reviews

About the Artist
Guitarist William Coulter has been recording and performing traditional music since 1981. He has performed with the bands Isle of Skye, Orison and, currently, with the Coulter-Phillips Ensemble. He has recorded two solo albums–Celtic Sessions and Celtic Crossing–as well as three albums of traditional Shaker melodies with cellist Barry Phillips–Simple Gifts, Tree of Life and Music on the Mountain–all on the Gourd Music label. William has appeared on compilations produced on the Narada label, Windham Hill and Hearts of Space. Four of these recordings have appeared on Billboard magazine’s “top ten” lists.

In 1998 William produced Celtic Requiem for Windham Hill Records, which features vocalist Mary Mc Laughlin. He was recently featured on a sampler produced by the Columbia Record Club featuring violinist Hillary Hahn and Máire Ní Bhraonáin, the lead singer of Clannad.

As well as performing and recording, William works as a producer and recording engineer, and teaches guitar at the University of California, Santa Cruz. During the summer he teaches at a number of music camps including the National Guitar Summer Workshop and Alasdair Fraser’s Valley of the Moon Scottish Fiddling School.

Product Description
Thousands of miles away in America, William Coulter fell in love with the music and language that came over the sea from the beautiful land of Ireland. His interpretations of these jigs, reels and airs reflect his deep reverence for tradition, along with his unique creative response as an individual musician - hurrah for the folk process! Joined by guests including Shelley and Barry Phillips, Irish fiddler extraordinaire Kevin Burke and others, the tunes include beloved traditionals The Lark in the Morning, Si bheag, Si mhor, Banish Misfortune, Lagan Love, The Kesh Jig and Return to Fingal. You'll also find unexpected treasures including the lullaby Einini*, Ay Linda Amiga from Celtic Spain, and the Victorian Marble Halls. *Featured on the Narada Sampler Celtic Legacy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Coulter understands Irish music on the guitar completely., July 1, 1999
By A Customer
William Coulter is a classicly trained musician, with the acute analytical skills that implies, but it is the heart and sweetness of his playing that won me over. I have heard him solo and in bands since he was a student at US Santa Cruz, with other luminaries of British Isles music and playing my guitar in an ice cream shop. He shines, just shines. This album captures more of his immediacy and glow than any other. Perfect album to introduce the uninitiated to Irish music.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for lovers of Celtic music, October 8, 1998
William Coulter brings a wealth of musical talent to this delightful collection of instrumental Celtic tunes. Some are ancient, some of his own composing (Stor Mo Chroi, written on the night of his son's birth, is a delight) and all are well-chosen and played. Coulter is one of a highly talented group of northern California musicians who consistently produce some of the best instrumental Celtic music available today. Grab this one if you love Celtic tunes.

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic piece, March 6, 2004
By jskirkman "jskirkman" (philadelphia, pa) - See all my reviews
this is an amazing recording. in a world of overly percussive guitar styles and a lost identity amidst much nouveax celtic music, coulter brings a sense of purity and melody that is not only refreshing, but yet simple and memorable. i find myself whistling tunes after listening to the cd. the clarity of the recording makes you feel there.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Lark At My Door
William Coulter has developed a reputation for very tasteful arrangements of Celtic 'standards' and a fine technical control of his instrument - the guitar. Read more
