When I bought this CD years ago it didn't get an especially favourable review in 'Gramophone'- apparently Von Stade didn't have the strength of voice for the Monteverdi. Hmm...well I would urge anyone at all interested in either Cavalli or Monteverdi to get this disc, which is a real favourite of mine. Unlike many of the authentic performance discs around you can actually hear emotion here which makes sense as many of the heroines are in dire straits - or at least very emotional! Leppard and the SCO give lithe and healthy support , and with Von Stade create some ravishing textures and sounds (eg. the heartfelt 'farewell to Rome' and impassioned Non E, Non E Crudel).
