Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Just before heading off to a 15-year stay in Europe, the stately tenor waxed a pair of records for Blue Note in August 1962: this classic and, two days later, A Swingin' Affair. It's been widely reported that Gordon himself considers Go! his greatest achievement, and (if so) it's easy to hear why. Brimming with conviction and poise, Gordon's gentle-giant sax carries itself with a sort of graceful edge that is difficult to emulate. He's always quick with a humorous quote, yet it always seems to fit just right. He's always languishing behind the beat, yet he never seems late. He possesses an enormous tone, yet he never overwhelms the songs or the listener. He sounds unhurried at any speed. His song selection is typically creative, holding little-known ballads close to his brawny chest like a big, cuddly bear. A stellar rhythm section of the elegantly funky pianist Sonny Clark plus Butch Warren and Billy Higgins doesn't hurt either. --Marc Greilsamer

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best albums in jazz history!, February 1, 2002
and I don't say that lightly. Dexter Gordon was a true jazz giant and this album is his best, in my opinion and those of many others. Dexter's big, dark tone and deliberate yet tasty solos shine through on every cut, from the little-recorded songs "Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry" and "Three O'Clock In The Morning" to the more familiar "Love For Sale". His supporting cast, Sonny Clark on piano, Billy Higgins on drums and Butch Warren on bass provide great collaboration.

This album is not secret; the cuts are well-represented on the various "Best of" cds out on Blue Note. Why get one or two cuts? Buy the whole thing on this CD!

I recommend this to all my jazz students and to anyone who likes mainstream jazz.

2.0 out of 5 stars Dexter Gordon's Best! Needs Remastering Though..., November 6, 2005
No disputing that this is an excellent jazz album and is one of my personal favourites as well as an essential one to have in any music collector's library. It needs a remastering though and so I'd recommend you go right ahead and get the remastered version. I just managed to get a remastered version in mini-lp sleeve packaging which is simply brilliant! The sound quality is like night and day when I played them both back to back. As the lp sleeve version is very rare and I believe only a few are left on the Tower website where I got mine, I guess that means you'll have to get the jewel case version but that's still a lot better than this version. Every track here though is a jazz standard; Dexter's sense of humour is what truly endears me to his playing as you'll hear him intersperse samples of other jazz standards (Panacea, Tisket a-Tasket, Take Me Out to the Ballgame among others) throughout the album. A man in total control of his instrument and a vital influence on future sax greats like John Coltrane who readily cited him as a major influence. A must have for any jazz lover's music library.

5.0 out of 5 stars A hard-bop classic, August 25, 1999
By A Customer
If you are a fan of "Our Man in Paris" I think you'll be thrilled with this equally intense session. A real over-looked find.
