5.0 out of 5 stars Underrated Wu Member Drops A Gem, December 29, 2004
This review is from: The Pillage (Audio CD)
Recently, there has been discrepencies about who is really in or out of the true Wu-Tang Clan. Cappadonna has basically become the guest of honor, the 10th Chamber. The Pillage is Cappadonna a.k.a Cappachino's debut solo album, and it is definetely a Wu Banga. He proves that his raps can not only improve Wu-Tang Clan (especially over U-God), but that he can certainly hold his own in the rap game.

The album begins with a great sample, which leads into the first track, Slang Editorial. As usual, Cap opens with a line ("I came to a fork in the road, and went straight.) that leaves you scratching your head, and thinking how cool it was. It sets the stage for a wonderfully produced and organized album. "Pillage" is a strong second track, but its heat is taken away a bit from being sandwiched in between two of the best tracks on the album. "Run," another fantastic track, desribes criminal life on the streets, and escaping from 5-0's. Next, Cappadonna totally owns "Blood on Blood War," my personal favorite. His flow and lyrics are absoultely on point with the beat.

The next two tracks are rather weak. U-God truly cramps the style of Cap and Meth on "Supa Ninjas." "Oh-Donna" features Ghostface, and is another classic Wu track, although Cappadonna's singing of "Oh-Donna" can wear on you. Another one of my favorites, "Milk This Cow" features Method Man on the hook, and Cappdonna's lyrics leave you motivated, and is a feel-good track. "South of the Border" is good, and "Check For a N****" is only average.

The album's energy picks back up with "Dart Throwing." Raekwon blesses the track with his gambino flow, and owns the track. Method Man drops a solid verse, as does Cappadonna, who preaches "I opened up my Rap Bible, then the light came over the children." The Pillage closes with a series of slightly above average tracks, many of which feature Tekitha, whos beautiful, R&B voice doesn't exactly work with Cap's raspy, nasal flow.

Overall, this is one of the best Wu solos released. The guest appearances are all superb, except perhaps U-God's. True Master is exactly that when it comes to the production on (most) of this album. His beats allow Cappadonna to flow how he should. This is a must-have for any fan of Wu-Tang Clan/East Coast Rap.

I loved this album when it dropped and I still do. "The Pillage" packs more punch than the average late-'90s hip-hop record, it's a standard of past Wu classics.
