Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

DJs have blended their favorite 12-inch singles onto mix tapes for years, but it wasn't until the mid 1990s that the mixes started getting pressed onto CDs with the blessings of the original artists on a regular basis. The Walkman Rotation compilation features 14 tracks' worth of (largely) Seattle-area hip-hop mixed together by J-Rocc of the Beat Junkies--winners of the International Turntablists Federation crown in 1997--and it's a remarkably tight collection of beats and rhymes. J-Rocc does a great job with his mix, but he's got solid material to work with; the beats are consistently innovative, and these MCs have good voices--and they know the meaning of flow. While there are no bum tracks here, Eclipse's two contributions, "World Premiere" and "My Position," are clearly the standouts. --Randy Silver

4.0 out of 5 stars A reaction from the fusion of Beat Junkies + NW Lyricists, October 26, 1999
By A Customer
When you combine the talent of NW lyricists, beat jugglin', and a tight production the outcome in this case was fluid. Artists featured on this release are as follows: J-Rocc, Eclipse, Arcee, Jake One, Mr. Supreme, Kutfather, Fourfifiths, DJ Ace, Samson & Swift, Carl Johnson, Third Degree, & Diamond Mercenaries. J-Rocc sets off the rotation with an intro that could make a man with no rhythm feel it, with "Somethin' Funky For Your Walkman". Pay attention to the beat jugglin', mixin', and blendin' when you've got a Beat Junkie @ the wheels. J-Rocc is your host for your ride 'round the turntalbes with some of Conceptions finest. The first lyricist featured on this compilation is Ohio's MC Eclipse. He puts down two tracks, "World Premier" which features the mic veteran Arcee and "My Position" a track which clearly states where he stands. Seattle's own Samson & Swift show how they do it in the cut "Watch Your Words", a straight forward message for those of you who want in on this industry. Mr Supreme lays it down on the joint "Any Last Words" this track features 3D of the Diamond Mercenaries. A versatile artist is every labels dream, Jake One just might be that one for Conception. He showcases live lyrics in "Essay On Pseudo-ism" which also features Arcee.

5.0 out of 5 stars a rare (?) treat from the funky president, January 18, 2007

(REAL NAME)
never thought I'd find any results when i asked the amazon-robots to find me a j-rocc cd, but boyee was I pleasantly surprised. This is a slice of some quality North Pacific Coast homespun hip-hop that is blended by one of the best DJs around. Being a Cali kid, I didn't know what to expect from our neighbors to el norte, but after listening to Walkman Rotation I now know they bring the real. An excellent mix for people wanting to break the mold of commercial (aka garbage) hiphop and see what else real heads have to offer.

5.0 out of 5 stars OH MY GOD!!!!, October 11, 1999
By A Customer
If the intro to Soundbombing2 got you hyped, if you felt "Definition" off the Mos Def/Talib Kweli Joint, if you respect true turntable skillz, then THIS IS FOR YOU!!!. Trust me, YOU CAN'T GO WRONG WITH ANYTHING FROM THE BEAT JUNKIES IF YOU LIKE HIP HOP!!!!!
