5.0 out of 5 stars This popular feeling..., May 9, 2006
By ricciodimare (Tuckahoe, NY USA) - See all my reviews
"Fisiognomica" (Physiognomics), the opening title of this gem album, was the 'science' of interpreting human character, intelligence, and virtue by analyzing physical appearances. The song evolves from this analysis, under the beat of middle-east-like percussions, to the refrain trascendence ("If you don't feel well/Turn to your Lord/ Believe me, we are nothing/ Just poor springless creeks"). This is a very meditative album. Its "E ti vengo a cercare" (And I come searching for you) plays on the duality of searching for the Supreme love as well as the earthly one: Its melody became so popular that the song was featured in a historical concert for pope John Paul II (note: In the 70's Battiato and his experimentations were advertised on specialized journals as the Anti-Christ...). You will find a beautiful ballad in Sicilian here (as in "Cinghiale Bianco"), "Veni l'autunnu" (Fall is coming). "Nomadi" (Nomads) is a beautiful composition from his friend Camisasca, but if you want to appreciate it better take Alice's version and not this one. The closing title, "Oceano di silenzio" (Ocean of silence) is a miracle of Battiato's pop with a quasi-Verdian aria (and a German quotation from a remarkable Fleur Jaeggy's book, Water statues, unfortunately difficult to find). This album is a must for authentic music lovers.
