5.0 out of 5 stars Essential AATT - for fans of neo-gothic melancholy influence, January 28, 2000
By Mark A. McCarthy "djmarko" (Portland, OR United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have been an And Also the Trees fan since the early 80's, and "the Millpond Years" is, in my opinion, their best album, and a timeless work of art. This album stands as testimony to the raw talent and amazing depth this obscure and sadly overlooked band offers to anyone lucky enough to listen. Like Japan, Bauhaus, and Low Life, AATT is one of those bands that was never discovered by the masses, but achieved cult status almost immediately. The lyrics of Simon Huw Jones, as is customary with all AATT albums, weave elegant, sorrowful tales of tragedy and love lost, and could easily be read as poetry. Toss in amazingly unique and haunting guitar work, and a tight band of proficient musicians, and you have And Also the Trees. Take one listen to Suffering of the Stream, Sandstone Man, or Needle Street, and you too will be a fan for life.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent followup to their last album: Virus Meadow, September 30, 1999
Using a bit more electronics than in previuos albums "The Millpond Years" goes in a new direction without sacrificing one bit of the fluid and somber imagery that makes AATT so enjoyable.Musically the album is somewhat less vague and subterfugal than their last release with bass and guitar being less ambiant and just slightly more in your face.Lyrically this album is no less than beautiful,in an Edgar Allan Poe sort of way.Simon's coarse yet soothing voice fits perfectly with the poetry that resides within every song.A must have for fans of "Virus Meadow".
