Biography

More of a power pop band than anything else, though they're nestled in Southern California's skate/snowboard punk scene, Unwritten Law formed early in the 1990s, with drummer Wade Youman the only holdover from the band's early days. The group eventually coalesced around vocalist Scott Russo, guitarists Rob Brewer and Steve Morris, bassist John Bell, and Youman.

After releasing their debut, Blue… Read more in Amazon's Unwritten Law Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Really good So-Cal punk, April 12, 2001
By Jonathan Miller (Huntington) - See all my reviews
This CD is incredible. Unwritten Law takes every espect of So-Cal rock and blends it into one excellent cd. This is probably the best punk rock cd I have heard since NOFX's Decline. Don't compare this with NOFX though, Unwritten Law has their very own unique sound. Every song explodes with an energy and raw uncut sound that no one can compare to. These guys are very talented musicians too. This isn't you usual underground bar chord punk, this music has serious depth. Harmonic, Teenage Suicide, and Before I Go really shows the talent that the band has. Genocide/418 is a great 2 song set featuring Brandon Boyd and Mike Einziger (2 of the best musicians of rock) of Incubus. Of course, there are some really hardcore punk songs on this CD too, I haven't mentioned most of my favorite songs. Anyone that likes punk rock and music that has depth and meaning will love this CD. This one will be played over and over in my CD player until the new Tool cd is released. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Cool Pop Punk Music, June 17, 2000
By Tim Yanagisawa (Long Beach, California) - See all my reviews
Out of all of the pop punk CDs I own (there aren't many) this is definitely the best. There is lots of vibe, something many new CDs today are lacking, a kind of SoCal youth vibe. From first listen on the audio samples, you may think Scott's vocals sound like Tom's from Blink-182, but in truth there is almost no similarity. Another strong point is the closings of the songs, which aren't typical punk or rock endings, they have little melodic tunes while the rest of the band is finishing the song, especially at the end of Harmonic. Yet another point is how the songs vary throughout the album. They can be very poppy (Sorry, Cailin) or very punky (Close Your Eyes, Teenage Suicide) or downright smart and inspirational (California Sky, Genocide/418). The guitars have some amazingly great melodies, especially the melancholy beginning to Harmonic, the driving chorus of Sorry, and the poppy background of Cailin. All of the tracks are standouts, seriously, but my personal favorites include Cailin, California Sky, Genocide/418 (featuring Mike Einziger and Brandon Boyd of Incubus), Harmonic, Lonesome, Close Your Eyes, and Sorry. The drums are an amazing part of the album, and you can actually hear Wade's talent throughout the greatly mastered CD. Look for Oz Factor and also buy some albums by NoFX, Millencolin, Blink-182 (Chesire Cat, please) or 10 Foot Pole.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh God, I Cannot Say How Much I Love This CD, May 28, 2000
By Todd Ballard (Orange, California) - See all my reviews
Unwritten Law has to be one of my favorite bands ever. Their self-titled release has to be my favorite of everything they've ever put out, and this includes Oz Factor which is constantly in my CD player. Every song is just amazing, especially California Sky, Lonesome, Cailin, Sorry, Teenage Suicide, and Close Your Eyes. California Sky reminds me a lot of growing up in Monterrey, California, skating and surfing, possibly my two favorite activities as a kid and now. Lonesome has an awesome bass line strung out on punk riffs. Cailin has scratches, poppy guitars, and some really cool vocals. Sorry is really funny, Teenage Suicide has a really cool beginning, and Close Your Eyes is a classic punk song, with great lyrics. Wade's drumming is really good, especially the occaisional solo. The rest of the band provides a perfect shell around the drums, and this makes Unwritten Law the perfect melodic pop-punk fourpiece. And they just happen to be my favorite pop-punk fourpiece. They're great guys, too, real down to earth.
