Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Fat Joe used to be the punch line to hip-hop jokes, his flows as unwieldy as his girth. So frustrated was Joey Crack (a.k.a. Fat Joe) at his inability to crush the rap game with his first two dud LPs, he spent several years in the woodshed, honing his craft and his Rolodex. Sprawled out over an hour of genuinely thugged-out beats (produced by everyone from Marley Marl to Younglord), Don Cartagena features a truckload of Joe's friends to prove the point. Nas, Big Pun, Raekwon, and Jadakiss bring the terror on "John Blaze," while Biggie's old belle makes you "scream Charli Baltimore in Spanish" on "Walk On By." It's a small gem and a refreshing surprise. Joey, you've come a long way, baby--with a little help from your friends. --Jon Caramanica

Spin
While the brilliant return of Juice Crew guru-producer Marley marl on "Find Out" is a welcome surprise, it's Joe's microphone enthusiasm and ability to merge his slightly accented voice with almost any beat--be it brutal or bouncy--that will move the crowd.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fat Joe hits hard, just this once, March 9, 2003
By John (United States) - See all my reviews
Fat Joe lit up with a classic here. After his first few albums were nothing to gawk at, it looked like he decided to switch up the style. And it was for the very best. This album is straight fire with cuts like "Don Cartegena", "John Blaze" (classic), and "Crack Attack". It definitly showed that Joe spent a lot of time crafting his flow and lyrics because his flow is ON POINT. John Blaze includes some guests, namely Nas, Raekwon, Big Pun, and Jadakiss. How that track didn't get more play is anyone's guess. A nice laid back track with a feel good beat is "My World", which also features Big Pun. Switch it up and you've got a very hot and rugged track "Terror Squadians" which features the Terror Squad. Just straight freestyling over a hard beat by Joe and the Terror Squad. Bone Thugs drop in for "Good Times" which is another feel good track which talk about the good times in their lives. Unlike Joe's other 4 or 5 albums, this one does not miss by any stretch of the imagination. Hip hop fans will be clinging to this for a long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some of Pun's, I Mean Fat Joe's Best Work, September 1, 2004
This album is so good it kinda sounds like Pun wrote it, oh that's right Pun did write the whole album. Don't believe me just compare this album to J.O.S.E and Loyalty you'll hear the difference.
