Impellitteri back with one of the best voices in metal Rob Rock. Eye of the Hurricane is an excellent album in the mold of riffy Dokken. This album is more diverse than the previous album Screaming Symphony and better for it. 11 songs on the regular album with some grooving tracks, an acoustic ballad and some balls out speedy metal tunes. Kingdom Fighter, Shed Your Blood and Bleed in Silence are classic songs. If you like gritty, thick riffs, absolutely shredding solos and awesome passionate vocals then you'd do good to get this album.

1997's Eye of the Hurricane was the seventh album from Impellitteri, the melodic metal band named for guitar superfreak Chris Impellitteri (a.k.a. the Christian metal Yngwie Malmsteen). Impellitteri is joined once again by vocal journeyman Rob Rock (the Christian metal Jeff Scott Soto, perhaps?).

I'm not usually a big fan of "guitar hero" albums. I enjoy some quality shredding as much as the next guy, but if the songwriting isn't solid, all the flashy solos in the world can't make it a good album. Fortunately Impellitteri is like fellow guitar wizard Axel Rudi Pell in that he writes some really good melodic metal songs that are more than just vehicles for his intricate solos.

There are some great rockin' songs on this one, with "Fuel for the Fire", "Kingdom Fighter" and the epic title track being the album's highlights. It's a surprisingly heavy, but very melodic album with some amazing vocals. Rob Rock really shines on this album, delivering what may be his best performance. This guy is such an incredible (and incredibly overlooked) vocalist.

As far as the lyrical content goes, these songs probably qualify as Christian, but only in a vague, open-to-interpretation kind of way. To me, that's a point in Impellitteri's favor, as the in-your-face Christian stuff can be a major turn off to those of us who are just looking for a good melodic metal album.

Eye of the Hurricane is one of the best Impellitteri albums I've heard so far, and should be an absolute winner to fans of Axel Rudi Pell, Yngwie Malmsteen, and previous work by Impellitteri and Rob Rock. Actually, it should please just about anyone who is into melodic hard rock and metal.

NOTE: Eye of the Hurricane was reissued in 2006 with digitally remastered sound and the Victim of the System EP added as bonus tracks.
