Product Description
Out of print in the U.S.! 1989 sophomore album from Wendy James and her Transvision Vamp mates. Produced by Zeus B. Held, the album is a blend of Pop, Glam, Bubblegum and Garage Rock, blended together with a spoonful of sugar to help the Velveteen go down. 11 tracks. 5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable, September 4, 2002
By fungo (Toronto, ON CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Velveteen (Audio CD)
Vamp gets my vote as Most Under-rated Band of All Time. This is NOT "disposable pop" -- it's brilliantly orchestrated, superbly produced psychedelic rock.

Wendy James gets all the attention, and her seductive vocals certainly do stand out... but the real hero is songwriter NC Sayer. The opening cut "Baby I Don't Care" rocks with the best of them. "Falling for a Goldmine" and "Bad Valentine" are hauntingly lilting, quite unlike anything else. And the title cut "Velveteen" is a sweeping, mind-blowing rock opera.

Oh, heck... call it "pop" if you must, but listen to it with an open mind. Preferably on headphones, late at night. Real loud.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Valentine, September 5, 2007
By Milesman (Redwood City, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Velveteen (Audio CD)
Transvision has found their voice on this album, it all comes together. Takes off and flies. Wendy vocally surfs wave after wave of righteous, rambunctious, reverb rock! "Baby I Don't Care", "Falling For A Goldmine", "Kiss Their Sons", and especially, "Bad Valentine" stand out.

Not that this is some silly bubblegum pop. Some of these songs have haunting turns that are unexpectedly moving, and all are crafted with skill, inspiration, danceable grooves, and decent lyrics.

Definitely also get their even better, yet almost-unknown final album "Tiny Magnets..." which takes this style to an even higher level.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun, Fun, Fun, July 20, 2004
By Brian Baker "Gone With The Sin" (Fridley, MN United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a great CD for those summer road trips. Wendy James doesn't have the greatest voice and the band's a little sloppy but it feels like that's how it's supposed to be. This band has been panned by critics forever but if you're a fan of fun, loud rock 'n' roll, this will do it for ya.

The album is pretty good. I admit that I do not love all the songs on this album, but it is well worth purchasing just to get the song "Velveteen". Read more
